Director of Human Resources, The York School

The York School is seeking a Director of Human Resources to join the Leadership Team of the School and play a key role in furthering the talent strategy and support the School’s commitment to student learning and experience by ensuring exceptional people practices and programs are in place. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Director of HR will focus on ensuring the Human Resources function and Talent Management practices are aligned to the mission and vision of the School.

The York School is a co-educational independent day school renowned for its challenging academic International Baccalaureate (IB) program and commitment to experiential learning – extending all over Toronto, Canada and the world. A not-for-profit corporation with approximately 150 faculty and staff, it has a strong presence in the community as an established employer.

Position

As a key strategic partner in the senior leadership of the school, the Director of Human Resources is responsible for talent strategy planning and execution, ensuring human resources programs, policies and procedures reflect the talent strategy and are effectively aligned to ensure achievement of the School’s mission and vision.

A designated HR professional, with either the CHRP, or CHRL, the Director of Human Resources must possess a minimum of ten years of progressive experience and be committed to employee satisfaction and engagement.  The Director of HR will be responsible for the School’s overall compensation strategy and provide direction, guidance and oversight to the School’s competitive positioning required to attract and retain employees. In addition to being responsible for managing the School’s group benefits, pension plans and negotiating employment contracts, the Director of HR will provide direction and guidance on employee relations issues, including professional conduct.

Fostering an environment of mutual respect, that supports and delivers human resource processes, programs, training, development and compensation in a way that supports internal equity and organizational competitiveness.

Responsible for the HR Department budget and the professional development budget, the Director of HR will be responsible for ensuring an effective recruitment process is in place for all employee hiring and oversee an effective program that includes employee onboarding and supports retention.

The Director of HR will ensure that all employment policies and procedures are compliant with applicable legislation and ensure best practices are in place.  

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

  • Post-Secondary Degree and/or Certificate in Human Resources Management
  • CHRP or CHRL designation
  • Ten years or more of progressive HR generalist experience across multiple HR disciplines
  • Previous experience in the Education sector, an asset
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal, including public speaking and group facilitation capability
  • Strong technical Talent Strategy and Human Resources knowledge of practices and proven commitment to staying current with legislation changes
  • Able to be flexible and adaptable

  • Sound judgement ability
  • Service oriented
