The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Regional Director Human Resources Canada, the HR Generalist will have HR oversight responsibility for supporting the Operations team for our HMSHost Vancouver Airport

He or she will assist in providing a wide range of HR support and advice. The successful candidate will play a key role in the success of the organization by offering guidance on recruitment, terminations, performance management, employee relations and HR best practices while facilitating positive relationships. The ideal candidate has expertise with working in a unionized environment.

HR Partner Function:

  • Establishes and maintains positive Labor relations. Participates in arbitrations, grievances, and contract negotiations, and ensures operations managers understand their CBA.
  • Partners with Loss Prevention, Accounting, and other departments to support operations' objectives.
  • Meets with management to understand current and future staffing levels needed to proactively recruit candidates to satisfy business needs; understands and acts upon specific operational data such as turnover rates, wage rates, staffing levels, diversity, and sales data
  • Performs general administrative functions including but not limited to employee file maintenance, preparation of legal compliance logs, and PeopleSoft systems data entry and maintenance
  • Support Management with employee relations, harassment and human rights complaints
  • Support learning team with HR Training/Orientation/Facilitation
  • Coach and assist management with documentation for disciplinary action and terminations•
  • Develops human resources solutions by collecting and analyzing information; recommending courses of action.
  • Prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
  • Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.

    Employee Relations:

  • Improves manager and associate performance by identifying and clarifying problems; evaluating potential solutions; coaching and counseling managers and associates.
  • Ensures that all federal, provincial, local laws, and corporate HR-related compliance matters are proactively managed, including but not limited to Employment/Labour Standards, Human Rights, Workers’ Compensation, Customer Fair Treatment and Transport Canada.  
  • Manages the regional process for response to Speak Up Hot Line calls, Sexual Harassment, Affirmative Action, and Fair Treatment complaints; Workers’ Compensation/ unemployment issues and unsolicited employee relations calls and letters; ensures that each issue is resolved fairly according to federal and, provincial employment law guidelines as well as Company policy.
  • Facilitates management level actions to include: performance management reviews, promotions, progressive discipline and terminations before implemented.
  • Performs confidential investigations and may provide input to the investigations performed by others; elevates matters as needed to the next level for input and resolution.
  • Responsible for ensuring any required branch local HR policies, guidelines, and programs align with corporate objectives and corporate safety initiatives.
  • Complies with all existing governmental and labour legal and government reporting requirements.
  • Protects the interests of associates and the company in accordance with company Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations.

Regulatory Adherence: 

  • Coordinates and oversees the administration and confidential investigation of all Workers' Compensation / unemployment issues, ROE, and other employee relations issues.
  • Assists with the implementation of company safety and health programs. Tracks and posts MOL-required data and files reports.
  • Complies with federal, provincial and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Provides day-to-day benefits administration services. Assist associates with any claim issues.

Human Resource Information Systems:

  • Maintains employee-related databases. Prepares and analyzes reports that are necessary to carry out the functions of the department and company.
  • Prepares periodic reports for management, as necessary or requested.
  • Fully utilizes Human Resources software to the company's advantage.
  • Conducts annual HR Audits and recommends action plans to correct deficiencies of assigned branches.

Special Projects:

  • Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Completes special projects by clarifying project objective; setting timetables and schedules; conducting research; developing and organizing information; fulfilling transactions.
  • Manages client expectations by communicating project status and issues; resolving concerns; analyzing time and cost issues; preparing reports.

  • A University degree or equivalent experience strongly preferred.  Related degree or diploma in Human Resources Management
  • Requires 5-7 years of HR Generalist experience, (including the supervision of other HR staff)  preferably from a service/retail hospitality industry  
  • High-energy, self-directed individual who can work autonomously.
  • Excellent people skills and a friendly, responsible, service-oriented attitude are required.
  • Strong organization, time management and problem-solving skills.

    Education and Skills Qualifications:
