A Day in the Life…

The Faculty & Staff Relations Manager is accountable for providing expertise and guidance to employees, supervisors, managers and Human Resources (HR) colleagues on the interpretation, administration and collective bargaining processes for the University’s collective agreements and applicable employment legislation.  A key element of this role is continuing to foster a strong and constructive relationship with Brock’s unions.

As the Faculty & Staff Relations Manager you will:

  • Act as the Chief Negotiator, representing the University in every aspect at the negotiation table including: conducting research to support collective bargaining, proposing mandates, preparing proposals, negotiating, costing, implementing appropriate strategies to achieve the University’s goals and objectives up to and including reaching a tentative agreement (subject to Board approval)
  • Represent the University at upper-level and final stage grievance hearings, third-party mediation and arbitration, with responsibility for effectively resolving disputes in a manner that supports fiscal stewardship and the University’s longer-term operational objectives;
  • Manage the resolution of complex, escalated issues related to (or that may lead to) discipline and dismissal
  • Lead informal mediation meetings between employees for the purpose of effective dispute resolution
  • Act as an expert resource to the Office of Human Rights & Equity Services (OHRES), and provide expert advice on the intersection of OHRES’s policies with terms and conditions of employment; advise on interim measures being implemented during an investigative process;
  • Provide guidance to, conduct and/or oversee workplace investigations, utilizing best practice and recommending/facilitating appropriate resolutions that are in compliance with relevant legislation, jurisprudence and University polices;
  • Support the Director, Faculty & Staff Relations in the preparation of materials to report on collective bargaining matters and outcomes to the Board of Trustees
  • Support the Director, Faculty & Staff Relations in the development of collective bargaining strategies for all union groups

What you Need to Succeed…

 

  • A completed Bachelors degree
  • CHRP designation or equivalent experience and education
  • 10 years of progressive human resources experience in a multi-union environment, preferably in higher education coupled with ability to establish and maintain sound working relationships
  • 5 years of experience in a labour relations role with strong judgment, evaluation and reasoning skills
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable employment Legislation, collective bargaining, managing the administration of collective agreements and policy interpretation
  • Demonstrated ability in conflict resolution, including successfully resolving issues via third-party dispute resolution
  • Demonstrated ability/knowledge in conducting workplace investigations and facilitating appropriate resolutions
  • Exceptional facilitation and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to advise and coach supervisors and employees on employment related matters
  • Ability to diffuse escalating situations and ability to handle contentious matters with sensitivity and confidentiality

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) or working toward completion would be considered an asset;
  • A Masters degree in Industrial Relations or Business Administration
  • Experience as a Chief Negotiator in collective bargaining
  • Third party facilitation / mediation training

 

Salary Range: $73,394.00 - $104,518
