Summary of Position:

The Assistant Head, Human Resources is responsible for implementing and overseeing policies, procedures and programs dealing with all employment-related matters of the school, including but not limited to, recruitment, retention, compensation, payroll, pension and benefits, growth and evaluation, the mentoring program and disciplinary issues all while working to ensure an exemplary workforce and a fair, diverse and inclusive workplace. In addition, this position participates as a member of the Professional Growth Committee, oversees the Faculty Mentoring Program and co-manages the School Safety Plan. The Assistant Head works to promote the vision, mission, and values of The Bishop Strachan School.

These responsibilities are carried out in compliance with all applicable legislation and best practices and designed to ensure the current and long-term effectiveness, risk mitigation, sustainability and fairness factors of the human resources, professional growth and school safety plan functions of the school. The Assistant Head, Human Resources reports to and works closely with the Head of School, is a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), sits as a staff representative on Board committees (as requested), and chairs the Internal Pension Management Committee.

Specific Human Resources Accountabilities Include:

  • Identifies strategic opportunities for innovation. This includes analyzing research, trends and education disruptions, searching for new opportunities that can potentially build upon the school’s brand and feed into the sustainability pillar
  • Oversees faculty and staff recruiting and retention processes and programs ensuring they are equitable, consistent, cost effective and sustainable
  • Designs and implements the Onboarding (Orientation and Guardian Angel) Program to allow for the building of an inclusive community
  • Oversees and manages the Faculty Mentoring Program through the Lead Mentor
  • Co-designs, implements and monitors the Faculty Growth and Evaluation process with the Principals
  • Oversees the Staff Growth and Evaluation Process with Department Heads and SLT including training, coaching and follow-up to ensure best practices are in place and goals and objectives are being met
  • Takes lead on the Leadership Growth and Evaluation Process
  • Participates in the annual sectioning and staffing process leading into the recruiting process
  • Responsible for the payroll, pension and benefits program including renewal, tracking, filings and communications
  • Chairs the Internal Pension Management Committee ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation interacting with third party consultants and reports to Finance annually on the results
  • Counsels employees on a range of employment and personal issues
  • Coaches managers in the employee relations aspects of their portfolios, including progressive discipline, to ensure clarity of expectations, consistency in approach, equity and legislative compliance
  • Coaches the Head and other members of the SLT in staff development and employee issues
  • Handles all employee-related legal matters on behalf of the school in conjunction with the school lawyers (employment, immigration and litigation) in a fair and compliant manner
  • Maintains currency on all employment-related legislation and best practices
  • Works closely with the Board Chair on sensitive matters of Head transition and contract
  • Oversees aspects of the internal employee communications such as the Staff Bulletin and the Human Resources Group page of myBSS
  • Manages appropriate budgets
  • Leads, mentors and manages direct reports to allow for setting of clear objectives to meet the needs of the school while providing appropriate coaching, development and performance review 
  • Participates as a member of the Professional Growth Committee
  • Oversees tracking of Professional Learning across the school

Specific Safe Schools Accountabilities Include:

  • Co-manages the School Safety Plan, which may include parts of the creation, implementation, revision, education and training of the Safe Schools documents, the Crisis Management Policies, Policy and Procedures for Preventing, Identifying and Investigating Harassment Violence and Abuse, Risk Management Plan for School Excursions and On-site Activities, the Pandemic Plan and any other polices that may be required from time to time such as AODA, including the retention of third party experts

Specific Board/Committee Accountabilities Include:

  • Reports to Finance Committee as the Chair of the Internal Pension Management Committee annually
  • Reports to the Board annually on the School Safety Plan
  • Acts as a staff representative on a Board committee if and as requested

Other Responsibilities

  • Participates as a member of the Senior Leadership Team in setting the strategic direction of the school
  • Commits to the Staff Growth and Evaluation Program
  • Involved and participates in the life of the school
  • Other related responsibilities and projects as required

Skills, Experience and Attributes Include:

  • A university degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specific employee and labour relations focus and a professional Human Resources designation
  • 10+ years working at progressively senior human resources roles within mid-sized organizations, in varied sectors including the not-for profit sector
  • Strong working knowledge of all applicable employment related legislation
  • Proven record as both a strategic thinker and a hands-on manager willing and able to manage day-to-day detail
  • Proven leadership experience working in a high performance, collaborative team environment
  • Commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace and understanding of and sensitivity to the work required
  • Demonstrated team-building skills including experience in goal setting, motivating, leading, evaluating, and developing a high performance team
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral, allowing for clear, concise and effective communication with all constituencies including at the Board level
  • Ability to have the “hard conversations’ in an empathetic and honest manner
  • Excellent judgement
  • Strong intuitive skills together with active listening skills
  • Ability to perform in a calm, reasoned manner under pressure and manage competing priorities
  • Creativity and problem-solving abilities exercised in a pro-active manner
  • Ability to build and develop relationships with stakeholders
  • Interest in and understanding of education and the “business of school”
  • Strong coaching, consulting and collaborating skills together with the ability to mentor
  • Highly organized with strong time management skills in order to manage competing demands
