Commissionaires Ottawa is currently staffing for an Investigator as a lead, sole investigator or as co-investigator relating to harassment in the workplace complaints in either the private or public sector. The Investigator will investigate complaints of ER HR related violations of law, regulation or policy.

Position Summary

Investigate and resolve complex workplace issues and complaints. Conduct investigations and maintain appropriate records in a confidential manner.  Draft investigation findings reports and make recommendation for corrective actions, including timeframes to the appropriate Parties.  Support the corrective actions by providing expertise, advice and clarification as needed by the Parties affected by the issue or complaint. Prepare and write complex ER HR Investigation reports and summaries of findings with supporting documentation that is fair, impartial, and represents the facts and analyzes investigative results to determine whether the facts suggest a violation of policy and or Legislation.

Qualifications

You will be evaluated against defined criteria, skills and attributes.  As such, you should clearly identify related / relevant experience and training based on the following:

Education:

  • University Degree with a focus on Human Resources and/or Employment Law and/or Industrial Psychology and/or Private Investigations
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience with the principles and practices of investigation and research, including interview techniques, principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting, research techniques and data collection
  • Professional designation (i.e CHRP, CHRL, LLB) an asset
  • Training in Administrative Investigative Techniques

Technical Knowledge:

  • Solid knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Human Rights code and, relevant Canadian Labour and Employment Law, including but not limited to the Canada Labour Code Part II, Ontario Labour Relations Act, the Employment Standards Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), OH&S Regulations Part XX-Violence Prevention in the Workplace.
  • Experience in alternative dispute resolution/mediation
  • Proven ability to thoroughly collect and synthesize information obtained through interviews and research.
  • Experience in proposing recommendations based on investigation findings
  • Experience collecting, analyzing and interpreting information received from investigations
  • Experience conducting interviews with Complainants, Respondents and Witnesses
  • Experience collecting, analyzing and interpreting information received from investigations
  • Experience in Mental Health First Aid

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills
  • Proven judgment and critical analysis skills
  • Experience in collaborating with Operations and Legal Department on complex investigations
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively managing high-volume workload and complex priorities
  • Demonstrate integrity and sensitivity to various culture
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in safeguarding confidential and sensitive information
  • Some travel may be required
