If you enjoy being on the front line of an operational client group, foreseeing potential issues before they occur and coming up with new and innovative ways to be both compliant and engaging, then this is the role for you.

Reporting to the Manager, Employee Relations, you will be a proactive and tactical advisor, a coach and counsellor to front line employees and managers, and will be responsible for providing consulting services, representation, support and advice for labour and employment related matters. You will support the strategic implementation of Human Resources programs to ensure compliance with all employment-related/labour legislation and collective bargaining agreements, and change management while championing a continuous improvement mindset that enables the business to achieve business results.

Relationship building is key! You will be instrumental in developing and maintaining key stakeholder relationships in order to facilitate information exchange with Human Resources, the client group you represent and the union to allow for the management of all aspects of employee relations for unionized and non-unionized employees at the GTAA.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Be the advisor, subject matter expert and counsellor to client managers and employee teams on issues related to employee relations, unionized change management, and harassment/disciplinary investigations
  • Build and foster ongoing relationships to effectively partner with union leadership, and to coach and influence business and key stakeholders in labour relation matters by encouraging a Human Resources/Employee Relations perspective to the business activities of the client area
  • Support Human Resource program delivery to ensure alignment with the goals of the organization and business by providing the tools and resources to empower your business group in the implementation and maintenance of their People Strategy from an Employee Relations perspective
  • Ensure adherence and compliance to policies and programs related to Labour Relations strategy, Canada Labour Code, Health and Safety and all other applicable bodies and support the development and make recommendations to Human Resources policies and programs and collective bargaining agreements
  • Provide performance coaching including documenting performance and conduct matters, preparing performance improvement plans and termination documentation for unionized employees when required
  • Administer the grievance process and be the single point of contact for the union for grievances pertinent to your client group. You will lead workplace investigations and grievance hearings by providing updates and recommended courses of action(s) to your manager and client manager, resolving issues and incidents through review and analysis of appropriate data and information and making recommendations for resolution
  • Prepare a strategy for mediation/arbitration cases in collaboration with your manager, and attend all mediation/arbitration hearings for your client group
  • Create employee communications and letters pertaining to collective agreement administration, i.e. grievance responses, investigation correspondence, disciplinary correspondence, workplace accommodations
  • Lead and facilitate effective unionized change management strategies and practices that supports the organizational vision and strategy, including presenting new policies/policy changes to your client group
  • Support Human Resources policies and programs that attract and build employee engagement and leadership capability, striving for a positive employee and labour relations environment reflecting the corporate values and culture
  • Ensure training needs of staff are met, as it relates to labour relations, and the adherence to workplace safety procedures

Qualifications:
 

  • University degree or college diploma in Human Resources, Business or another related field is required
  • At least five (5) years’ labour relations experience in a unionized environment
  • CHRP designation is considered an asset
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience and proficiency in using all Microsoft Office applications
  • Past work experience using Oracle HR and Kronos is an asset
  • Valid G Provincial driver’s license required
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance

  • Effective coaching, mentoring facilitation, conflict resolution and relationship management skills
  • Strong negotiation and collective bargaining agreement knowledge
  • Strong business acumen with a customer orientation and ability to understand and effectively communicate business needs
  • Ability to be a self-starter and remain flexible in a fast paced and ever changing environment
  • Excellent time management and organization skills with the proven ability to manage multiple priorities which may change based on business demands
  • Effective oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Strong understanding of applicable employment and human rights legislation
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work outside of core business hours in order to meet client needs when required
