This position is within our Trane business.

The role will provide leadership to Trane employees, manage EHS activities and programs, and incident prevention activities for the assigned locations, and ensure compliance with IR, local, provincial and national requirements.  The position will also be responsible for developing and implementing safety programs, strategies, policies, training, and procedures.  The position will promote a strong safety culture and maintenance of a healthy work environment.


  • Lead and coordinates efforts to achieve site EHS goals and objectives.
  • Drives and promotes zero incident culture and employee engagement throughout the business.
  • Uses established EHS data processes to manage and report data such as injuries and illnesses, environmental metrics, risk assessments, EHS action items and other pertinent information. Analyze safety data to lead and coordinate the safety effort for continual improvement.
  • Ensure audits are completed on a regular basis of the office areas, warehouse, and job sites to detect existing or potential risks and hazards.  Ensure the recommended corrective or preventative measures are completed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure contractors and subcontractors have implemented an effective safety process by conducting pre-qualifications and by visiting/auditing job sites on a regular basis.
  • Visit Commercial Sales Offices, Parts & Supply Stores, and job sites on a regular basis to ensure effective implementation of EHS processes and programs.
  • Facilitate EHS training and orientation as needed. Identify EHS related training requirements for associates and support processes to ensure training effectiveness and compliance.
  • Implement applicable EHS policies and procedures to be followed in compliance with IR, local, provincial and national rules and regulations.
  • Participate on district and corporate teams as needed to assist in the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain facility specific management plans for hazardous waste and non-hazardous materials. Audit treatment, storage, disposal and recycling facilities that handle, process and dispose all operational wastes.
  • Support offices environmental and refrigerant management programs.
  • Organize and manage teams (i.e. health and safety committees) to identify and implement safety improvements, waste reductions and resource conservation.
  • Drive incident and near miss reporting.  Perform root cause analysis on incidents and injuries to determine specific actions needed to prevent their reoccurrence.
  • Evaluate non-standard tasks to uncover risks and identify corrective actions.
  • Coach/mentor employees on safe work practices, hazard identification and risk management.
  • Oversee workers' compensation program administration, including working with all parties to aggressively manage and support transitional duty and return to work programs.
  • Prepare technical EHS regulatory reporting.
  • Complete risk assessments and recommend control measures for all potential areas of concerns.
  • Manage the safety data sheet and new chemical request process.
  • Oversee the facility emergency response team to ensure appropriate training in emergency response, spill response, disaster preparedness and crisis management.  Ensure drills and equipment are in a ready state and effective communication of responsibilities to personnel.
  • Serve as the primary EHS contact for facility EHS emergencies.


  • This position can be based out of our Toronto (Markham) office or our Ottawa office.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences/Engineering, or other related program.
  • One or more safety-related professional certifications desired (i.e. CIH or CSP).
  • A minimum of 5 years practical safety experience in a previous role.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including written and verbal in English (bi-lingual French considered an asset).
  • Strong ability to lead, motivate, engage and influence others.
  • Good computer skills in MS office (Outlook, Excel, Word).  Experience with Gensuite is an asset.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of provincial occupational health and safety, Worker’s Compensation and applicable environmental legislation.
  • Ability to take innovative approaches to improve processes and solve problems.
  • Must be detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to travel to job sites, and offices within the district and the United States.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations including, but not limited to:
    • DUI in the previous 5 years.
    • Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless / Careless Driving or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions in the previous 3 years.
