Job Description

As an individual contributor within the Workforce Management organization the Data Scientist role is responsible for modeling complex organization problems (Human Capital Related), discovering valuable insights, and identifying opportunities using visualization, statistical analysis, data mining, and algorithmic techniques. In addition to advanced analytical skills, the position incumbent will also be proficient at integrating workforce knowledge into a non-technical environment.

The Data Scientist works closely with internal HR clients, data coordinators, managers, executives, and other IT teams to turn data into critical and insightful information for decision making. They need to be creative thinkers and able to propose innovative ways to look at problems. It is critical for the Data Scientist to present all their findings to the Business by explaining assumptions and validations that can be easily understood by all levels in the organization.

This role must have excellent written and verbal communications skills that is clear and structured.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Delivering actionable, concrete, and proactive analytics that drive HR’s forecasting capabilities, business insights, and effective evaluation of Husky’s investment in human capital through HR programs and services.
  • Providing recommendations on data sources, analytical tools, and research to validate analytical findings
  • Providing thought leadership on analytics that leads to continuous enhancement of Workforce analytics
  • Modeling and framing business scenarios that are meaningful and which impact on critical business processes and/or decisions
  • Working collaboratively work with HR COEs and other professionals to identify analytics priorities, educate them from both IT and the business perspectives on new approaches, such as testing hypotheses and statistical validation of results. Helping the HR Function understand the principles and the math behind the process to drive organizational buy-in.
  • Recommending ongoing improvements to methods and algorithms that lead to findings, including new information
  • Presenting and depicting the rationale of their findings in easy to understand terms for the Business
  • Supporting the annual workforce planning cycle at both strategic and operational levels
  • Providing ad-hoc analytics to transform people data to actionable intelligence
  • Providing scenario planning, forecasting, and future state modelling of workforce analytics and leveraging quantitative and qualitative measures of the workforce for both current and future-sate outlooks.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or Computer Science or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Typically requires 2-4 years’ experience manipulating large datasets and using databases, and 2-4 years’ experience with a general-purpose programming language (such as SQL, R, Python or other big data frameworks, Java)
  • Experience in Human Resources (preferred)
  • Experience in the use of statistical packages
  • Familiarity with basic principles of distributed computing and/or distributed databases
  • Demonstrable ability to quickly understand new concepts.
  • Experience using machine learning algorithms
  •  Proficiency in statistical analysis, quantitative analytics, forecasting/predictive analytics
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of one or more business/functional areas
