We are pleased to be conducting this search on behalf of our Client, a rapidly growing company in the environmental and recycling sector.  With a headquarters in Aurora, they have doubled in size in less than a year through strategic acquisition and continued organic growth.  That trendline will continue across operations in Ontario and Western Canada.

With this significant growth, they are seeking a Human Resources Manager / Director to develop and manage strategic processes in addition to sound employment infrastructure.  This will involve developing, implementing and monitoring initiatives ranging from compensation programs and human resource policies to leading employee engagement and cutting edge performance development across the Company. 

As a key member of the Leadership Team, this (initially) stand alone position will leverage Human Resources representatives already in place in the regions to develop a consistent HR strategy and to provide leadership, structure and mentorship to developing this indirect team of HR.  This position has reporting line to the CFO and the Company’s CEO.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Lead talent acquisition and external recruitment with the attraction of top talent.
  • Respond to and provide follow up on employee inquiries, incidents, safety concerns, and complaints.
  • Develop training programs and related endeavours.
  • Ensure that employee performance evaluations are conducted and train or assist managers/supervisors in providing employees with performance feedback and effective development.
  • Ensure that all employees comply with company policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Partner with the business to drive a performance based culture with respect to performance management, training and succession planning.
  • Support the annual compensation process including external benchmarking, merit increases, and performance bonuses.
  • Understand and apply employment & labour law, policies, practices, and compliance across multiple provincial jurisdictions.
  • Provide guidance to management in health and safety.
  • Ensure proper procedures related to WSIB are effective and efficient.
  • Keep abreast of health and safety developments and legislative changes.
  • Ensure employees have clear goals and are aware of expectations.
  • Some of the workforce is unionized.  Therefore experience in labour relations or collective bargaining processes is desirable.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, health, insurance obligations and by-law requirements.

Please note that comfort level with regular travel will be required in the early part of this mandate:  Travel within Ontario, Calgary region and BC will be required, particularly in the early part of the mandate to build rapport and understand organizational structure. 

Education and Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in business administration, human resources management, or a related field required. MBA would be an asset.
  • Certification in human resources management (CHRP, CHRL, CHRE).
  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience in a human resources specialist or generalist position with additional leadership or management experience.
  • Some of the workforce is unionized.  Therefore experience in labour relations or collective bargaining processes is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet strategic objectives for HR and the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage HR core processes such as talent management, succession planning, and employee relations.
  • Ability to make sound business decisions and evidence based recommendations to senior management.
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Sound leadership, staff management, and teambuilding skills.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.
  • Ability to interpret and implement relevant legislation and labour laws.
