Reporting to the Manager of Labour Relations, the incumbent will be responsible for the interpretation and administration of collective agreements, investigations and disciplinary action, the Labour Relations Act, the School Boards Collective Bargaining Act, and other related employment legislation within a large multi-union environment.  The incumbent will demonstrate and deliver subject specific expertise to a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Interpret and administer multiple collective agreements across a varied range of employee groups
  • Provide timely and accurate advice regarding labour relations, employment legislation, conflict resolution, grievance administration, investigations, policies and best practices to senior management, principals, and supervisory staff
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with union officials and a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Administer all steps of the grievance/arbitration process in accordance with the relevant collective agreement
  • Conduct workplace investigations related to misconduct, discrimination, harassment, and child protection complaints
  • Conduct research and interpret case law, arbitration awards, and HRTO decisions
  • Work in partnership with other members of the Labour Relations team to support and facilitate collective bargaining processes with strong emphasis on research, analysis, and strategy development
  • Research, organize and analyze information related to human rights complaints
  • Implement pay equity systems in accordance with legislative requirements
  • Update and administer processes related to job evaluations systems
  • Develop and deliver training programs to stakeholders within the organization

Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Labour Relations, Human Resources Management or equivalent as determined by the Board
  • Professional designation (eg. CHRL or equivalent) considered an asset
  • Minimum five years of progressive labour relations experience in an multi-union and public sector environment, preferably in the education sector
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in labour relations, human resources practices and processes, negotiations, grievance arbitrations, investigations, human rights, workplace harassment, and relevant provincial and federal legislation
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative working relationships and provide exemplary service to a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent research, analytical, organizational, problem solving and strategic thinking skills with proven ability to influence change
  • Strong negotiation and mediation skills
  • Previous experience with education collective bargaining processes considered an asset
