Through its “Ignite Learning” campaign, the Durham District School Board (DDSB) has outlined its strategic priorities, which include Success, Well-Being, Leadership, Equity, Engagement and Innovation. This is an exciting opportunity for a Human Resources Business Partner to contribute meaningfully to these priorities.
Reporting to the Manager of Employee & Labour Relations, and working in partnership with leadership on a varied portfolio of employment-related issues, you’ll support strategic human resources activities in the areas of employee and labour relations. This will include performance and attendance issues, employee counselling and career planning, and organizational change and restructuring. As an HR Business Partner, you’ll provide support related to organizational policy/procedure and collective agreement interpretation and application, and be directly involved in HR program development and delivery, and project work.
A confident, experienced HR generalist, comfortable acting as a business partner, you’ll integrate with the leadership team of each client area to understand their challenges, support strategic direction and identify opportunities for education and development in human resources practice. You’ll advise both leadership and staff on complex issues related to individual performance and attendance, accommodation, change management and employee complaints, and facilitate conflict resolution. You’re also well prepared to participate in formal labour/management activities such as grievances, arbitrations and negotiations, the development of business processes for HR, and more.
Your profile as a qualified Human Resources Business Partner will include:
- A post-secondary education in a business-related field and extensive experience (5 years) as an HR generalist in a large, multi-union environment.
- A CHRL designation and experience working in the academic sector, preferred.
- Broad HR Generalist background with expertise in several human resources areas, including strategic planning, performance management, recruiting, staffing, pay and benefits, compensation, organization design, classification, employment equity, and labour and employee relations.
- Experience in the following areas:
- Three (3) years in business partnering, managing change and coaching.
- Five (5) years in customer service.
- Three (3) years in labour relations, interpreting and applying collective agreements, administering grievances, attending arbitration hearings, etc.
- Two (2) years in workplace investigations and report writing.
- Two (2) years’ experience working with HR metrics/records/information, preferred.
- One (1) year of experience in compensation and job evaluation, preferred.
- Strong knowledge of employment-related legislation (ESA, OH&SA, Workers’ Compensation Act, Labour Relations Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Workplace Violence Legislation, etc.) and experience in program/policy development.
- Skills in conducting workplace investigations and writing reports.
- Experience interpreting and applying collective agreements within a large, unionized environment with multiple collective agreements.
- Demonstrated success in business partnering, change management and coaching.
- Competencies that include interpersonal, innovation, collaboration, mediation, coaching, conflict resolution and organizational skills and a customer service focus.
- Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
