Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness, the Labour Relations Specialist is responsible for supporting the development, implementation and evaluation of effective labour relations strategies and provides expert evidence-based advice to the HR Business Partners on labour relations matters.

The Labour Relations Specialist will maintain a union-specific portfolio (ONA, SEIU and OPSEU) and will act as the subject matter expert and engage in coaching, mentoring and training that supports and reinforces a strategic HR delivery model.

The Labour Relations Specialist is responsible for the grievance process up to and including arbitration, researching and investigating formal grievances, and working with both Directors and Union Representatives to determine resolutions.

In addition, Labour Relations Specialist will:

  • Provide expert advice by advising Supervisors, Managers and Human Resources Business Partners on the interpretation of relevant policies, Collective Agreements, legislation and other terms and conditions of employment, ensuring that all relevant legislated, Collective Agreement and policy driven obligations are met.
  • Maintain an on-going positive relationship with local union representatives and recommend approaches for early identification and resolution of potential problems
  • Chair Labour Management Committees and lead negotiations with respective unions.
  • Develop and execute employee and labour relations strategies to support and further the interests of the Hospital.
  • Engage in creative problem-solving with relevant stakeholders to develop effective strategies and solutions in support of operational initiatives and challenges that adhere to collective agreement and statute.
  • Represent the Hospital with counsel in external litigation including mediations, arbitrations, Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, OLRB proceedings
  • Participating in the resolution of issues related to discipline and dismissal, including conducting workplace investigations as required.
     

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business and/or Human Resources Management
  • Masters of Industrial Relations preferred
  • Certified Human Resources Leader designation (CHRL) is preferred
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge and experience with Human Resources practices and principles including provincial legislation (Human Rights, Employment Standards, AODA and Health and Safety), Collective Agreement and hospital policy and procedure administration, with the ability to expertly interpret and apply
  • 3-5 years’ experience working in HR with proven expertise in Labour Relations preferably within a hospital setting.
  • 3-5 years experience as an HR Generalist would be an asset
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with all levels of the organization including, but not limited to Directors, colleagues and Union Representatives
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written along with strong presentation skills
  • Demonstrated collaborative approach that values open and honest communication, integrity, respect, consistency and fairness
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality concerning sensitive issues in a professional manner
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Above average computer abilities including Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Experience with Meditech would be an asset
