Director, Human Resources (Faculty of Health Sciences)

Ranked as one of the world’s Top 100 universities, McMaster University is devoted to the cultivation of human potential, realized through our innovative educational programs, cutting-edge research, and the diverse students, faculty, staff and alumni who make up the McMaster family. Dedicated to creating a Brighter World, we recognize that our people are our most valuable resource. Those who join McMaster will find a community of talented individuals who are inspired by the university's commitment to embodying the values of integrity, quality, inclusiveness and teamwork. It is through these talented individuals, their creativity and drive for results that McMaster University has earned its reputation as being Canada's most innovative university.

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), the largest Faculty within McMaster, has an unwavering commitment to collaboration, strategic partnerships, accountability, innovation, excellence, integrity and optimism. Our pioneering approaches to education and our reputation for world-class research has consistently placed McMaster among the top 50 universities in the world for health and medicine.  The Faculty enjoys close relationships with its academic hospital partners, as well as strong collaborations with researchers in Canada and around the world.

Critical to the continued success of FHS is a strong foundation of co-operative operational and administrative excellence.  The Human Resources department within FHS aims to deliver strategic value by supporting the Faculty, in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders across the University.  The Faculty has unique HR needs because of its size, the complexity of its operations, integration with clinical environments and diverse employee roles.  The HR team within FHS must understand and embrace these complexities, while supporting the alignment and integration of HR functionality with central campus, with a focus on accountability, service excellence and strategy execution.

The Faculty is seeking a Director of Human Resources to join its senior leadership team and champion the alignment of human resources services with Faculty and University strategies.  The ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to balance their sound knowledge of HR functions with the ability to be a true client-facing business partner.  Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President of FHS, and serving as a member of the Faculty’s Operations Group of senior administrative leaders, the Director will work in tandem with key stakeholders to develop a people strategy for FHS that will build and mobilize capacity in alignment with McMaster’s mission, vision and values, and with central human resources.  The successful candidate will bring experience developing and articulating an inspirational, inclusive and people-centred vision to diverse stakeholders, and driving transformational change within a complex environment.  Critical to the success of this role is a proven history of relationship management and the ability to foster and sustain a collaborative culture while advocating for the needs of FHS across the University.  The Director will demonstrate the capacity to adapt to a changing environment, seek opportunities to add value, navigate complexities, enable novel approaches to achieve Faculty and Departmental needs, engage in organizational HR process re-design and technology solutions, and deliver operational excellence.

The successful candidate has at least ten years of experience in a senior HR leadership position, ideally embedded in a health or academic setting.  You are a top performer in your current role with a proven track record of collaborative leadership, talent development, long-term strategic planning, effective execution of change management principles, efficient operational management, and strong productive partnerships, resulting in satisfied stakeholders and a capacity to exceed expectations.  You have direct experience leading transformational change and operationalizing a people-centered vision. In addition, as the Director you will succeed by developing collaborative relationships with a diverse group of constituents through the implementation of a long-term vision, guided by the recommendations arising from a recent administrative review of the HR function at the University.  You will ensure that the FHS HR unit strengthens the reputation of the Faculty and University by ensuring the delivery of superior service as a strategic business partner, overseeing a team responsible for assessing and anticipating stakeholder needs, developing integrated solutions and delivering value-added service.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply online on the Careers page of the McMaster website by October 31st, 2019. We thank you for your interest; only candidates moving to the interview stage will be contacted.

In keeping with its Statement on Building an Inclusive Community with a Shared Purpose, McMaster University strives to embody the values of respect, collaboration and diversity, and has a strong commitment to employment equity. The University seeks qualified candidates who share our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. While all qualified candidates are invited to apply, we particularly welcome applications from women, persons with disabilities, First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, members of visible minorities, and LGBTQ+ persons.  In accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, upon request, accommodation will be provided by McMaster University throughout the recruitment, selection and/or assessment process to applicants with disabilities.
