The HR Consulting unit is a team of human resources experts and innovators who contribute to the achievement of Ryerson University's strategic priorities. We partner with our clients to create and deliver outstanding practical and strategic human resource solutions, programs and services that enhance workplace culture, engagement and inclusion. The Opportunity The Human Resources Consulting team at Ryerson is looking for a passionate HR Consultant with in-depth knowledge of employment regulations, case law and human resources principles and practices and who thrives in a complex multi-union environment. The HR Consultant will partner with leaders in their assigned client groups to support and empower them in their decision-making on the following issues:  

  • Employee and labour relations.
  • Learning, change and transition.
  • Performance management and conflict resolution.
  • Organizational development including diagnosing and addressing underlying issues.
  • Full cycle recruitment and retention.
  • Organizational design.

With a collaborative approach, you will develop a strategic partnership with clients and implement best practice HR programs, policies and systems that support departments to meet the strategic priorities of the university. The HR Consultant will build relationships with clients to help them see policy and collective agreements not as barriers, but as frameworks for solutions. These solutions are rarely one-size-fits-all, so sound judgment and decision-making skills are essential. Collaboration will be key to developing solutions with clients. The HR Consultant will take the lead in the business partner role of a cross-functional HR team, comprised of functional experts from each unit in HR, assigned to your client group. This position reports to the Manager, HR Consulting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration or a related field.
  • 5+ years experience in a large, unionized organization is a must. Preference is given to experience in academic, public sector or para-public sector organizations.
  • Completion of CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) and/or MIRHR is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills to develop and deliver projects, tools and resources.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with constantly changing schedules and priorities. Strong relationship building skills and the ability to coach, advise and provide consultation to clients in a positive and effective manner.
  • Proactive in anticipating clients’ needs and expectations in order to deliver comprehensive and high quality service.
  • Success in implementing cost-effective and innovative sourcing for candidates, such as social media recruitment, and participating in Employment Equity and diversity outreach initiatives for all levels of positions.
