Durham has it all: major infrastructure investments, an accessible and specialized talent pool, world-class education institutions, and a well-established enterprise-driven business community.

The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, a newly created position, reports to the Chief Administrative Officer, and is responsible for providing vision, dedicated leadership, and direction to enhance and drive the implementation of the Region’s anti-racism framework and community building initiatives. By ensuring alignment across various portfolios addressing racism, discrimination, and the prevention, identification, and removal of barriers to access in opportunity, the Director will create clear accountabilities, strengthening the Region’s ability to serve its diverse communities. The Director provides expert advice and guidance, drawing on their extensive understanding of the dynamics of discrimination, cultural diversity, and current issues and trends in the field of equity and inclusivity. As a positive and highly motivated leader, the Director will work collaboratively to build this growing team.

The ideal candidate possesses a relevant university degree in social sciences, public policy, public administration, law, education, or similar field complemented with progressive and varied experience at a senior level developing and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion strategies and programs. Your deep knowledge and a strong understanding of concepts including but not limited to: anti-racism, allyship and social justice, understanding and valuing lived experience, commitments to truth and reconciliation, LGBTQ2S+ issues and experiences, accessibility, anti-ageism, and creating welcoming communities are critical. The successful candidate will be a passionate leader with experience building partnerships and working with organizations, businesses, community members, and residents to improve access to services and employment in a complex socio-political environment.
