We are a privately-owned organic grocery store with 70+ employees and we are looking for a forward-thinking Human Resources Generalist to join our team! 

This exciting intermediate level stand-alone position will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer to implement, administer and support various human resources initiatives focusing on initiatives to attract, select, orient, develop, motivate, engage and retain staff at The Sweet Potato.  The HR Generalist will support our proactive approach to solving potential HR concerns before they become prominent issues. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a People & Culture strategy through policies, practices and systems that positively impact the organization
  • Manage all aspects of the Human Resource function
  • Work closely with the Department Managers, drive recruitment process at all levels:
  • Forecast recruitment needs and develop creative strategies to identify and attract hard to find seasonal and other candidates
  • Create effective job postings and conduct sourcing activities to fill open positions
  • Manage full cycle recruitment process
  • Hiring and onboarding
  • Perform payroll and Benefits responsibilities:
  • Prepare and administer the payroll for all company employees, including pay-related information
  • Maintain benefits administration
  • Maintain payroll and HR files for all employees in accordance with statutory requirements
  • Implement salary decisions in accordance with policies and approval
  • Prepare reports for upper management as requested
  • Manage People & Culture strategies: 
  • Manage, implement, and support key HR programs including performance management, learning & development, and termination/resignation practices
  • Create and update job descriptions for existing and new employees
  • Support and maintain Staff Wellness programs
  • Employee relations and internal communications
  • Liaise with external partners such as consultants, lawyers, government officials and third-party providers as required
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to make sound structuring decisions, providing a holistic view, and helping us build for the future
  • Provide expertise, support and guidance into the Leadership team relating to HR matters
  • Participate as a member of the Joint Health & Safety committee
  • Execute select company events and special projects as requested

Skills & Experience:

  • CHRP and/or CHRL designation
  • 6-7 years of progressive generalist experience, ideally in a multi-discipline Human Resources environment
  • Previous retail experience is a requirement.  Previous HR experience for a retailer is an asset
  • Solid technical human resources knowledge in a variety of functional areas (recruitment, talent development and management, employee relations, legislative compliance, health & safety, etc.)
  • High emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, able to build and maintain relationships, influence and be a trusted advisor at all levels
  • Demonstrated experience creating and implementing processes, systems, and tools
  • Comfortable working as the sole HR practitioner but can also work as part of a team
  • Current knowledge of progressive HR practices and key trends
  • Committed to Intersectional Anti-Oppression Framework to support a diverse workforce
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite applications
  • Payworks experience, an asset
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • High degree of self-accountability
  • Tactful and diplomatic with sound judgement and discretion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Great sense of humour and grace under pressure
  • Proactive and confident with a polished and professional style
