Job Summary:

The Human Resources Manager will be based in our Toronto, Ontario office, and will report directly to the Senior Director, HR Americas & Talent Management, in Toronto. You will have the opportunity to travel to provide direct in person support to our Montreal office (travel up to 30%) as well as provide backup for other sites.  As the Human Resources Manager and a member of the Leadership Team for the offices you support, you will have the drive to make a difference in a complex matrix environment, where you can demonstrate your understanding of business trends and needs to ensure current programs and procedures are supporting the regions business strategy. You will have the energy and enthusiasm to help in the strategic development of Human Resource initiatives in conjunction with other departments and a passion to promote, communicate and implement Human Resources initiatives and ensure high quality HR support.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the business strategy by helping identify, prioritize, and build organizational capabilities, behaviors, structures, and processes which reflect current laws, corporate values and objectives, regional culture, work environment and employee needs. 
  • Guide and train operations management to recruit high potential employees to align with the function/business strategy  
  • Ensure leadership and coaching culture is cascaded through the organization
  • Drive the people processes (performance, development, and career) to ensure that employees’ level of performance and capabilities meet current standards
  • Develop and promote feedback mechanisms for employees to influence the continuous improvement of HR services and processes   
  • Resiliently provide expert advice and coaching to build strong business relationships with local management and establish credibility with employees  
  • Maintain close contact with the cross functional Corporate HR team to work in synchronization with the other business units
  • Review and benchmark the internal and external environment to improve the HR policies and initiatives and enhance overall business performance
  • Provide communications and work with two union local (CUPE) handling day-to-day matters, grievances, supporting negotiations, etc.
  • Identify and drive the communication and sharing of learning across functions to facilitate continuous improvement
  • Act in the capacity of an independent confidential resource for staff and managers on a wide variety of issues in support of an effective, positive work environment.  Participate in dispute mediation and collaborate with Managers on the appropriate actions.  Provide guidance on issues, which include conflict resolution, roles and relationships, performance, and training.
  • Be accountable for managing (coordinating) processes and emerging issues in the following areas: Total Rewards; Performance Management; Employee and Leadership Development; Employee Engagement; Organizational Development; Change Management; Recruitment; Talent Management; On-boarding and Orientation; Succession Planning; Diversity and Inclusion and Employee Relations.
  • Participate in HR special projects as assigned – for example policy or program design, development and communication

 

Education and Experience:

  • Post-Secondary Degree or Certificate from an accredited University/College
  • Human Resources Designation (CHRP or CHRL)
  • Previous Human Resources Management experience, preferably 3-5 years
  • Previous experience of working in a unionized environment, preferably 2-3 years
  • Demonstrated standard level proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, internet/intranet applications and preferably HRIS (Workday) familiarity
  • Knowledge and experience with benefits enrollment including annual open enrollment process, as well as Defined Contribution Plan.
  • Experience working with regional and national employment laws

  • Solid consulting and analytical skills; focused on results
  • Ability to build strong professional relationships at all organizational levels
  • Demonstrated competencies in several aspects of HR Management, (i.e. labour relations, succession planning, performance management; total rewards; coaching)
  • Strong oral, written communication skills in English. Second language preferred - French language skills, written and oral would be an asset.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential and contentious issues
