Job Details

The Director of Human Resources will:

  • Manage the successful development and implementation of innovative Human Resource strategies, programs and plans.  Partners with management integrating Human Resources strategies and practices that support organizational goals and reinforce a collaborative, engaged and high performing culture. 
  • Manage the full-cycle recruitment program, including onboarding, employee relations, performance management, talent development, change management, employment law and compliance, etc.
  • Provide leadership implementing performance management, training & development, employee assistance, and organization development
  • Provide management coaching to enhance effective employee and manager communication and engagement as well as to ensure legislative and policy compliance.
  • Provide expertise, consultation, and coaching to managerial stakeholders to ensure the appropriate management of all employee relations’ issues including change management, performance, disciplinary action, and conflict resolution.  
  • Maintain knowledge on new and evolving federal employment legislation such as the Canada Labour Code and Federal Labour Standards, while identifying gaps and making recommendations for compliance as required.
  • Partner with TMC, CAO and MBQ managers to identify opportunities for continuous improvement; providing input, influencing and interpreting the design, revision, and development of Policy and Program initiatives aimed at enhancing human capital.
  • Consult with and coach leadership regarding optimal business model design, organizational structure, job design, and the assessment of capabilities to ensure alignment with the Mission, Values, Culture, and Goals of MBQ.
  • Manage the Human Resource department budget and staff; controlling operating costs, allocating and transferring funds to ensure that productivity, performance measures and goals are on target and ensure prudent fiscal practice.

Education and Experience:

  • University degree or college diploma in Human Resources, Business, Law, Public Administration or a closely relevant field.
  • CHRP designation is required; with continued requirement for HRPA Membership in good standing and obtaining ongoing designation renewal.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible human resource related experience in an organization of comparable scope and size to Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, with an emphasis in developing and administering all major functions of human resources including supervision of professional staff, or an acceptable combination of training and experience.

Knowledge/Skills & Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of current trends in Human Resources Management.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant federal employment legislation for managing human resources in a First Nation community, is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Mohawk history, government, culture and language would be an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of, and relevant experience with most, if not all areas of the HR scope of practice including: employee relations, HR best practices, employment law, policy development, organizational development, job design and evaluation, learning and development, HR metrics, recruitment and selection, employee health, wellness, and safety, and people with disabilities etc.
  • Ability to deal with highly sensitive and personal information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Solid interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships. 
  • Ability to successfully work under pressure, respond to shifting needs and manage multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to assess risk and determine appropriate action.
  • Ability to manage time and priorities.
  • Ability to demonstrate personal resiliency and effectively respond to change. 
  • Ability to flex personal leadership and thinking style.
  • Solid ability to deal effectively with politicians, management and staff at all levels in the organization, as well as external organizations and members of the public.
  • Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector check; possess valid “G” Driver License and Clear Driver’s Abstract.
