Are you a transformative leader, recognized as a champion of diversity and inclusion? Do you have the confidence and credibility to act as a subject matter expert and drive a culture of meaningful change? This is a unique opportunity to lead by example and support the City of Mississauga in advancing its goals of equity, diversity and inclusion – across the organization and beyond.

Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario in the Regional Municipality of Peel, the City of Mississauga has a diverse population of 721,599, making it the second-most populous municipality in the Greater Toronto Area. Mississauga is a vital and growing city, home to Toronto Pearson International Airport, Canada's busiest airport, and the headquarters of many Canadian and multinational corporations. Guided by its values of Trust, Quality and Excellence, the City is committed to governing in an open, responsive manner, providing services that add value to citizens’ lives, and achieving excellence in public administration.

The City of Mississauga is seeking a passionate, dynamic and persuasive Diversity & Inclusion Strategic Leader who, as a key member of the Strategic Initiatives team in the City Manager’s Office, can influence at all levels – within the City of Mississauga and among community leaders – while balancing multiple priorities and the demands and interests of multiple stakeholders.

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Initiatives, you will lead and facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of a range of programs and initiatives to advance equity and inclusion, as identified in the City of Mississauga’s Workforce Diversity & Inclusion Strategy. To achieve this, you will partner with internal and external stakeholder groups to champion community outreach initiatives, and ensure that diversity and inclusion strategies and programs are embedded within core processes and day-to-day operations across the Corporation and within the community.

A highly skilled critical thinker, proactive and strategic in approach, you will support leadership in implementing equity-driven strategic planning and priority setting, and provide direction and advice on designing equity-driven decision-making and governance processes. The City will rely on you to identify systemic barriers organization-wide and work with leaders to actively challenge the status quo and ensure meaningful progress and reporting. This will see you partnering with internal stakeholders and ensuring continual progress on Strategy actions by developing and monitoring metrics and evaluation processes, and working closely with Human Resources and other teams to identify key opportunities to advance equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) awareness and visibility, and support EDI-focused learning and capacity building across the Corporation.

Acting as a subject matter expert, you will advance equity-driven organizational change and build a culture of shared responsibility across the City of Mississauga’s workforce to advance the Corporation’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse and equitable workplace culture and environment, as well as recommend best practices and advocate for high human rights standards in policies and practices.
This is a high-profile mandate within a highly diverse municipality, calling for a university degree in Equity Studies, Social Science, Business or Public Administration, or a related discipline, and at least 5 years’ experience in leading, influencing and implementing multi-year strategic equity and inclusion initiatives for a large, complex public or private sector organization, including group, process and meeting facilitation. Along with having worked collaboratively with diverse equity-seeking communities to ensure they are centred in organizational change and governance, you have exhibited a strong understanding of the principles of equity, intersectionality, anti-racism, decolonization, inclusion, and anti-oppression, as well as Ontario Human Rights Commission policies and guidelines.

Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the application of those terms, frameworks and legislations in an institutional context will also prove invaluable in this role, together with a strong understanding of federal, provincial and regional government processes and institutions. Given the highly collaborative nature of this position, you will draw upon your excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong emphasis on networking and outreach, as much as on your experience in using project management and equity-driven change management principles.

Due to Covid-19, most of the City’s offices are currently closed to protect the health and safety of its employees, clients and community. As a result, this position will be required to work remotely for an undetermined period. Once the offices re-open, you will report to Civic Centre, Mississauga.
The Corporation of the City of Mississauga is committed to creating a workplace that is diverse and inclusive, a place where all employees are treated with respect and dignity and are supported in reaching their full potential.

Individuals with the expertise of lived experience, that is, individuals who identify as members of equity-seeking communities, are strongly encouraged to apply. Click HERE for more information on the City of Mississauga as an employer.
