ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE

Under the direction of the Vice-President, People, provides proactive services, problem-solving, advice and support to the Company’s property-level on human resource matters.  The ultimate objective of the Manager’s efforts is to support and contribute to the attainment of the organization’s objective of being an exemplary employer and provider of unsurpassed quality of care and service, while achieving a reasonable return on investment for its shareholders, including supporting the culture of the company and ensuring that the values of the organization are communicated and understood at all levels.

BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS

A related university degree.  A minimum of three years of experience in a labour relations and human resources position in a mid- to large-sized company is required, with a preference within the healthcare or hospitality section.  Experience leading and conducting labour negotiations is important.  A high level of spoken and written communication skills, and demonstrated capacity to influence and earn the respect of others, is essential. A certified Human Resources Professional designation would be of advantage.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Negotiates collective agreements for designated residences.
  • Recommends to general managers/administrators decisions based on collective agreements and policies, and provides interpretation/administration of the collective agreements.
  • Handles final step grievances and rights arbitrations.  Utilizes as expedient other problem solving processes such as mediation.  Provides representation and input to the interest arbitration process as necessary.
  • Provides proactive services, problem solving, performance management advice and counsel to administrators and line managers in all human resources areas.
  • Provides training and development in union/management relations to managers and supervisors.
  • Provides advice and education on the disciplinary process, from coaching and counselling through to the termination of employment.  Advises on the professional and legal aspects of the disciplinary action.
  • Advises on legal compliance to minimize the risk of legal or third party action related to requirements under government regulations such as the Occupational Health and Safety, Workers Safety and Insurance, Human Rights, Accessibility, and Employment Standards Acts.
  • Participates in residence audits, providing reports and recommendations.
  • Develops and maintains mutually satisfactory business relationships with Regional Managers, General Managers/Administrators and Managers.  Acts as the primary liaison when employee relations issues arise and guides them through the solution process.
  • Assists in the recruitment for salaried staff, including interviews and preparation of offer letters and contracts of employment, when requested by the Vice-President, People.
  • Provides training and in-services as requested in all areas encompassed by the job responsibilities. 
  • Analyzes information relevant to the nursing home and retirement home industries generally, including wage trends and settlement patterns, showing changes and relating such changes to the company averages and directions.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of orientation procedures and programs for new hires, and assists with the training in all aspects of human resources.
  • Assists with the orientation and training for managers in the people policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures, and responds to enquiries from staff regarding these policies.
  • Participates in residence audits, providing reports and recommendations, as assigned.
  • Participates in the Verve Quality Improvement (VQI) Program.
  • Complies with all corporate policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required mandatory training/education.
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System.  This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills.
  • Performs other related tasks as delegated by the Vice-President, People.
