Director of Human Resources

Based in Stratford, Ontario, the Stratford Festival is one of the world’s foremost repertory theatre companies. It operates year round, presenting a season of about a dozen plays each year between the months of April and November, a rich stream of digital content and hundreds of Forum events, designed to deepen understanding of the plays. For every person a theatregoer sees on our stages, we have seven people working behind the scenes, some of the world’s most dedicated and experienced arts workers. Director of Human Resources

Reporting to the Administrative Director, the Director of Human Resources will provide overall human resources leadership and support to the Stratford Festival. Within this generalist role, the position implements and oversees policy development and human resources practices to support a positive, professional, fair, and safe work environment for its 1000+ staff and contracted artists.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures to meet legal requirements and support best employment and Health & Safety practices
  • Advise managers and supervisors regarding employment matters, from the perspective of legal rights and responsibilities and best practices
  • Advise employees on current human resources policies and programs, as well as general advice on problem solving with respect to their employment relationship with the Festival
  • Act as a representative of the Festival in labour relations matters
  • Provide interpretation of collective agreements to management and staff
  • Oversee the Health & Safety program for the organization to ensure legal compliance and best practices are followed
  • Manage the organization’s compensation structure and job evaluation program 
  • Provide leadership on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs for Festival staff and patrons
  • Oversee payroll staff and ensure that payroll practices are in compliance with legislation, policies and collective agreement requirements
  • Ensure the Festival’s HRIS system is kept up to date and all security and reporting requirements are met 
  • Oversee the Company Accommodations program
  • Oversee the organization’s benefit programs
  • Oversee employee communications activities and programs
  • Oversee all employee recognition programs
  • Manage budgets and allocation of funds for training programs
  • Provide direct guidance and supervision to the Human Resources department staff
  • Set and monitor budgets for the human resources department

Qualifications:

  • University Degree or equivalent education and experience in a field related to Human Resource Management, Arts, or Commerce
  • CHRP or CHRL designation is required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior human resource role
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in a unionized environment

The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a cultural or not-for-profit environment, or a strong interest in the performing arts.

This is a full-time position with requirements to work both remotely and onsite as require at the Festival Theatre in Stratford, Ontario.

Job Type: Full Time

Annual Salary: $93,000-$116,000
