WORKPLACE SAFETY AND INSURANCE SPECIALIST – JOB ID 14668

Reporting to the Supervisor, Disability, the Workplace Safety and Insurance (WSI) Specialist is accountable for supporting the Region's Workplace Safety Insurance Board disability benefits programs including managing complex, longer term and/or WSIB appeals claims.

The incumbent will:

  • Review occupational incident report details and ensure the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) reporting process is initiated and followed
  • Ensure timely and accurate disability case management documentation is entered into Parklane
  • Manage WSIB related claims and facilitate the Return to Work (RTW) process
  • Act as a resource and provide support to management/employees by taking the lead role in facilitating return to work/accommodation meetings and making recommendations in the return to work/accommodation process
  • Implement steps to mitigate lost time and costs specific to complex and/or longer-term occupational disabilities and ensure accommodations adhere to Workplace Safety & Insurance legislation and policies and the Region's policies and collective agreements
  • Support the Region's 'Core Committee' (CC) process including decision making, providing information, analysis, guidance and advice considering both the employee and the Region's interests
  • Be the primary contact in liaising with WSIB staff (Case Managers, Return to Work Specialists and external service providers)
  • Manage complex and contentious situations, consider alternative and possible consequences
  • Assist in WSIB appeal process; review claim files to determine if an appeal is appropriate and prepare a summary and recommendations for Region's legal staff for appeal
  • Act as a subject matter expert and provide guidance to Regional staff on WSIB law and policies and occupational disability management principles, processes and procedures
  • Provide ongoing guidance and advice and prepare and facilitate training sessions for management staff to support increased WSIB and disability management knowledge
  • Keep abreast of changes to WSIA legislation and WSIB Operational policies and procedures
  • Manage non-occupational claims as required

The successful applicant will possess:

  • A diploma or degree in Human Resources, Occupational Health, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy or a Health related discipline
  • Disability Management designation considered an asset (CDMP, CRTWC, CVRP)
  • A minimum 5 years experience in a disability management role including claims management, within a large multi- unionized environment with demonstrated experience managing complex WSIB claims with a Schedule 2 employer(s)
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act related regulations and procedures and WSIB rules and processes for Schedule 2 Employers, WSIB income replacement criteria, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals and Tribunal processes, and related Regional policies and procedures and collective agreement provisions
  • Sound knowledge of the disability management process and including claims management software (ideally Parklane)
  • General knowledge of Regional jobs and operational needs related to RTW/accommodation opportunities, challenges and requirements and knowledge of medical guidelines related to disability management
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, problem solving and facilitation skills
  • Sound research, analysis, writing and communication skills to convey legal and technical information to a variety of audiences
  • Excellent organization and prioritization skills
  • The ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • The ability to interpret and apply Workplace Safety & Insurance Act (WSIA) legislation, WSIB and WSIAT policies and procedures, disability management best practices and principles, and Regional policies and collective agreements related to occupational disability management requirements
