THE OPPORTUNITY

As the People & Culture Director you will be responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership and management of a comprehensive human resources program including the following; recruitment and selection, employee relations & retention, training and development, compensation and benefits, succession planning, org design, workforce design/planning, performance management, employee engagement, health & safety and workplace policies. You will utilize our HRIS System (Rise People) to deliver on our people focused human resources program.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will act as a strategic partner to the CEO and members of the Senior Management Team and provide expertise in support of the organization’s cultural and people initiatives. You will also ensure the day-to-day management of HR operations in support of creating a memorable and enjoyable workplace experience for all employees. You will act as a member of the senior management team and participate in corporate strategic planning, policy setting and the identification of emerging trends and issues with a focus on identifying and implementing solutions. 

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for a collaborative and strategic HR professional who can move our HR processes and practices to the next level to meet our organizational and people initiatives. You will use data, analytics and strategy to move our people and culture initiatives forward. This role requires you to be a skilled consensus builder and coach who can communicate with a variety of stakeholders and resolve conflict – listen to various perspectives and recommend appropriate actions.

You will be proactive and strategic but also able to roll up your sleeves when needed. You will provide leadership in creating a decentralized national environment while role modeling the leadership required to emphasis an environment of collaboration and inclusion. In this role, you will act as the employee/HR advocate at the leadership table. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Must haves

  • 7+ years’ experience leading and delivering human resources services, ideally within a national organization
  • Post-secondary education or relevant work experience that demonstrates a full understanding or progression in human resources related roles
  • Analytical and strategic thinker but also flexible and practical solutions focused
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching and advising management in an HR capacity
  • Knowledge of HR best practices
  • A track record leveraging technology to improve systems and processes
  • Technical skills in MS Office applications and experience using HR-specific systems
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (good judgement, influence and diplomacy at all levels)

 Nice to haves

  • CHRP designation is an asset
  • Familiarity with not-for-profit organizations
  • Bilingual language capabilities (English and French) 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the execution and implementation of a proactive people & culture strategy that supports teamwork, continuous improvement among staff, volunteers and donors and is aligned with strategic priorities;
  • Provide strategic support to the senior management team to help meet business objectives by leveraging the talent, skills, knowledge, creativity of our people;
  • Advise management on compensation, pay equity employment matters through effective coaching and conflict management strategies; when required seek legal advice on employment matters;
  • Play a leadership role in ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental aspects of organizational and people initiatives through strategy development, employee training and committee support;
  • Ensure prompt, informative communication with employees on employment issues of concern to them, particularly in respect of maintaining a safe, healthy working environment;
  • Develop and maintain a nationwide employee engagement program in support of organizational priorities while enhancing the employee experience (inclusive of employee surveys, analysis of survey results and support any action planning);
  • Develop a compensation strategy and structured program in support of organizational development and priorities, with the support of an external vendor;
  • Develop and implement an effective learning and development program and culture that includes capitalizing on knowledge transfers, mentoring and coaching processes, professional development opportunities, diversity and inclusion development  etc.;
  • Maintain up-to-date and effective recruitment processes by reviewing current practices and recommending improvements as required;
  • Oversee and participate where needed in full-cycle recruitment efforts;
  • Develop and execute an onboarding process that utilizes technology to create a more efficient and effective experience as a welcoming and informative tool for new employees;
  • Facilitate annual performance review process that is supported by an effective annual compensation review process;
  • Oversee and utilize HRIS system (Rise People) to deliver on an effective and innovative HR experience for employees;
  • Maintain organizational policies (including the development of new policies) and adherence to organizational policies while ensuring Crohn’s and Colitis Canada remains compliant and up to date with all provincial employment legislation;
  • Maintain and keep up to date any HR resources (organizational chart, staff directory, etc.)
  • Oversee payroll and employee benefits function (Specialist, Payroll and Benefits) and act as back up to payroll when required;
  • Oversee all Health & Safety procedures and act as employer representative on Joint Health and Safety committee;
  • Oversee all office management activities, with the support of the reception function (liaise with building management and external equipment vendors, maintain office supplies, etc.); and
  • In collaboration with the IT Manager/external tech support, coordinate the set up/delivery of equipment for employees.
