Job summary

Resumes are being accepted for the position of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Specialist in the Human Resources department within Corporate Services.  Reporting to the Manager, Talent and Organizational Development, this role will bring an experience-based understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion to influence and inform employment policy development, project planning, and employee program activities. This role contributes to achieving the goals of Guelph’s Strategic Plan (Guelph. Future Ready).

We are looking for a strong communicator with great interpersonal skills, experienced in building relationships and engaging others. The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Specialist will advance equity, diversity, and inclusion at the City of Guelph within our employment systems and identify opportunities to further change efforts throughout the organization. 

The successful candidate will lead the implementation of the City’s Diversity and Inclusion Plan. This role will lead an internal cross-departmental Welcome Workplace team, to identify opportunities to make change, share best practices and solve problems in a collaborative environment. Additionally, this role will work in partnership with key stakeholders in our community related to employment and with the CAO Office’s anti-racism and Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities initiatives.

Duties

  • Lead the implementation of the City’s Diversity and Inclusion Plan which includes strategies, measurable actions, and activities to ensure our employment systems and employee programs are equitable and inclusive.
  • Deliver programs and services to promote inclusive recruitment and retention strategies, branding strategies and best practices in support of our diverse talent and culture of inclusion.
  • Lead the corporation in an ongoing process to identify and make recommendations to eliminate systemic barriers and inequities. Seek out and advocate for best practices.
  • Lead an employee working group, the City’s internal Welcome Workplace team, and coordinate reporting and measurement of outcomes.
  • Lead the development, sourcing and/or facilitation of employee and leader training programs related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate data to report on progress and make recommendations for improving employee programs, policies and practices including workforce census data reports; interpret data compared to labour market data.
  • Work collaboratively with the Human Resources department to support ongoing initiatives across all aspects of the employee experience (recruitment and selection, training and education, promotions, and succession planning) to foster a more diverse and inclusive workplace and make recommendations to address gaps.
  • Develop evaluation tools to measure and monitor the effectiveness of programs and initiatives.
  • Work to build strong relationships and trust with staff, community members, groups and organizations involved in this work.
  • Represent the City in external forums, such as municipal diversity and inclusion communities of practice, Municipal Learning and Organizational Development Network, and serve as a subject matter expert at conferences, professional associations, and meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by management in support of organizational goals.

Qualifications

  • Considerable experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through a post secondary education or certification in human resources and considerable experience in leading and developing diversity and inclusion strategies while influencing organizational change. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience developing diversity and inclusion initiatives and training.
  • Experience championing, leading and executing large-scale initiatives to drive organizational and transformative change.
  • Certificate in diversity and inclusion leadership an asset.
  • A commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion. 
  • Passionate about connecting with and learning from diverse communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and with the ability to advocate and influencing change.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public
  • Ability to deliver results on strategic objectives through effective planning, team management and problem solving
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Familiarity with performance measurement and program evaluation would be an asset.
