The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc. (CLHIA) has an opening for a Director, Human Resources in its Toronto Office.

Scope

We are seeking a highly passionate, motivated and experienced Director to join the CLHIA to lead the Human Resource (HR) department, reporting to the Vice President Finance and Administration. The key responsibilities for this lead HR role include developing high impact HR strategies and initiatives across all HR functions including Talent Management, Learning and Development and Total Rewards. These programs and services are to be designed to promote a positive, inclusive and highly engaged work environment.

The ideal candidate will serve as a key business partner, trusted advisor and collaborator with management to develop, design and lead HR strategies, programs and communications in support of the CLHIA corporate goals and objectives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Directs and manages HR services. This includes identifying, recommending and delivering HR programs, policies and processes related to compensation, benefits, pension, staffing, talent management, employee engagement, remote work/return to office arrangements and employee relations. This also includes staff and budget management as well as supporting the evaluation of future HR information systems.
  • Designs and implements organizational development/effectiveness strategies and programs that contribute to a positive organization culture and employee experience; advise and contribute to strategies on organization design and related plans to meet current and future business needs; advise and design initiatives to respond to the key insights from employee surveys and contribute to the corresponding action plans. 
  • Key business partner to provide support and counsel to management and employees on HR matters (e.g. implications of organizational decisions, employee relations/conflict management, performance management, interpretation of HR policies and employment legislation and provides input to update and maintain the employee handbook). Works closely with management to build, foster and demonstrate the CLHIA values, culture and leadership competencies.
  • Leads talent/people management programs which includes directing recruitment strategies, staff onboarding and orientation, employee relations, performance appraisals, recognition, learning and development and performance management programs.
  • Directs CLHIA rewards programs including the compensation program, group insured benefits, special benefits programs and CLHIA retirement programs (including registered defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans). This includes overseeing plan administration and plan documentation, annual reviews or renewals, ensuring competitiveness with the market and managing relationships with external service providers and consultants.
  • Proactively anticipates and identifies emerging issues and trends to affect the overall organization health including morale, effectiveness, turnover, engagement and productivity. 
  • Actively identify ways to continuously improve programs, services and processes to ensure ongoing effectiveness, efficiencies and alignment.
  • Contributes to corporate governance by preparing analysis and related briefing materials for selected committees reporting to the CLHIA Board of Directors.
  • Oversees HR databases ensuring all personnel actions are updated in HR, payroll, time and attendance, benefits and pension systems.
  • Provide HR services to affiliated employers as per management services agreement.

     

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • University degree and at least 10 years related experience in HR including supervisory experience.
  • Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) or equivalent designation.
  • Broad knowledge and experience of HR best practices, employment law, compensation, benefits, pension, organizational planning, organization development/effectiveness, employee relations, safety and training and development.
  • Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent communications skills (verbal, written, presentation).
  • Strong coaching, advisory, consultation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence in managing complex human resources and interpersonal matters.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a fast-changing environment with a strong commitment to client service.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders (vendors, consultants, member company staff, colleagues in other organizations).
  • Strong ability in using MS Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of French would be an asset.
