Human Resources Manager

The Stephen Lewis Foundation partners with community-based organizations which are turning the tide of the HIV and AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa by providing care and support to women, children, grandmothers, LGBTIQ communities, and people living with HIV and AIDS. Since 2003, the SLF has funded over 1800 initiatives, partnering with more than 325 community-based organizations.
Salary: $78,000-$81,000
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Human Resources Manager is responsible for delivering front-line Human Resources services in the areas of Recruitment and Selection, Employee Relations, Compensation and Benefits, Learning and Development, and Health and Safety matters all while maintaining the utmost levels of confidentiality and discretion. The Human Resources Manager works in collaboration with Directors, Senior Managers, and employees to ensure that the Foundation’s HR policies, procedures, and practices are implemented in line with the Foundation’s values. The Human Resources Manager is also responsible for providing advice, coaching, and guidance on a range of employment-related matters.
This is a full-time position and is based at our downtown Toronto office. Given COVID-19, all SLF staff are temporarily working remotely until further notice.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages and participates in all aspects of recruitment and selection processes from developing job descriptions to interviews, to the coordination of employment offers and on-boarding.
- Manages the assessment process to ensure pay equity across the organization and to align compensation packages to market.
- Develops and ensures HR policies and practices are compliant with relevant legislative requirements and reflect organizational values and needs.
- Manages, prepares, and implements bi-weekly payroll processing.
- Supports staff to manage and track vacation and other types of leave.
- Administers the employee performance review program and scheduling, including support for managers and supervisors on supervision, coaching, and feedback to staff.
- Acts as plan administrator for group benefit plans and liaises with plan providers and management as it relates to the planning design, renewals, etc.
- Provides advice to the Executive Director and Directors on HR best practices.
- Participates in and provides oversight and guidance for complaint investigations, ensuring adherence to organizational policies and legislative requirements.
- Advises and supports management in the appropriate resolution of employee relations issues.
- Prepares service agreements and contracts for SLF providers and independent consultants.
- Provides accurate and timely advice concerning agreements, contracts, and employment legislation interpretation and implementation, seeking external guidance where required.
- Responds to staff inquiries and requests in a confidential and timely manner.
- Ensure practices and procedures exist to maintain the confidential storage and security of all employee files and other related information.
- Coordinates the co-op placement programs of the organization.
- Lead member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee and addresses health and safety issues, as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of progressive human resources generalist experience.
- CHRP, CHRL or CHRE certification is considered an asset.
- Approachable, tactful, sensitive and diplomatic.
- Strong relationship building abilities and influencing skills in conjunction with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with Ceridian PowerPay an asset.
- Strong knowledge of the statutory and regulatory framework in which employee relations operate.
- A proven ability to apply the utmost discretion in dealing with sensitive issues and managing confidential personal information.
- Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills
- Well organized and able to streamline, prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Experience working in partnership with other leaders to build a strong and successful organization.
- Willingness to contribute to a constructive, positive, and collaborative work environment.
- Personal commitment to the values of feminism, social justice, anti-racism, anti-colonialism, solidarity, collaboration, and gender equality.
