Profile:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Health and Safety, the Health, Safety & Wellness Coordinator provides comprehensive Health, Safety and Wellness program support including policies, procedures, training, and initiatives for a healthy environment in relation to all business enterprises at March of Dimes Canada (MODC). The Coordinator provides expertise and leadership in Health and Safety, and wellness, in support of management throughout MODC. The Coordinator ensures the agency is in compliance with regulations, standards and policies set forth by governing bodies across Canada; provides input and coordinates occupational and non-occupational injury incidents related to Workers’ Compensation (WC), Short Term Disability (STD) and Long Term Disability (LTD) claims. The Coordinator identifies issues and business needs and brings policy recommendations to senior management, alerts managers to preventable incidents, and takes an active role in improving the quality of work life as measured by the Quality of Work Life/Employee Engagement study, absentee reports, turnover and other statistics. In collaboration with the Health, Safety and Wellness team, the Coordinator provides support to wellness programs in line with MODC’s Culture Code that enhance the health of employees, improve attendance at work, improve morale and increase productivity

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate Workers’ Compensation (WC), Short Term Disability (STD) and Long Term Disability (LTD) claims, working collaboratively with third party administrators, supervisors, and the employees to facilitate early and safe return to work plans.
  • Act as a key HR contact to assist employees and supervisors, in facilitating early return to work, improving safety programs including the development and/or delivery of required training and recommending effective measures to achieve accident and incident reduction objectives.
  • Advise managers on policies, procedures and disability management, including liaising with varying Provincial and Territorial Workers’ Compensation organizations nationally.
  • Provide effective coordination support to the Senior Manager, Health, Safety and Wellness, implement training, national events, and conduct research to provide recommendations on development of prospective HR and Health and Safety related policy.
  • Act as back-up to other Health, Safety and Wellness Coordinator  in the following areas:
  • Support to MODC management and staff to address evolving concerns related to COVID-19 safety precautions by ensuring that all policies related to COVID-19 are up-to-date in alignment with Public Health authorities and multi-provincial government directives.
  • Act as a key HR contact to assist employees and supervisors, in improving safety programs including the development and/or delivery of required training and recommending effective measures to achieve accident and incident reduction objectives.
  • Collaborate with Site or Program Managers and internal and external providers/vendors to administer the Ergonomic Assessment process.
  • Chair and provide administrative support to the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) that includes organizing quarterly meetings, monthly inspections and ensuring health and safety information is posted and up to date with the necessary legislation.
  • Conduct fire warden training; update fire safety maps and zone list at National Office as per applicable legislation.
  • Implement and coordinate Wellness initiatives regularly both at National office and across the country, including the annual health & safety week.
  • Maintain management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Advise supervisors and managers regarding employee programs, policies, procedures, documentation and processes relating to employee relations.
  • Proactively identify employee relations issues and address to resolve these issues in a timely manner including conducting workplace investigations and orienting and coaching managers and staff appropriate safety protocols. 
  • Collaborate with HR Leadership Team to identify, plan and introduce programs and improvements to capitalize on our current strengths and deliver additional offerings to improve on safety and overall employee engagement across Canada.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources or Business Administration is required.
  • General knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and/or related designation such as the Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) is an asset.
  • CHRP designation (or working towards) an asset.
  • Minimum three (3) years of HR experience providing a full range of services with an emphasis on health and safety.
  • Current knowledge of Canadian HR Legislation and employment laws combined with the ability to interpret and communicate human resources policies and procedures, related legislation and regulations.
  • Experience working with HR systems and proficient in a variety of computer applications requiring use of complex MS Suite functions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact and build professional and effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to handle tight deadlines, multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Readily able to adapt to changing requirements and maintaining effectiveness in varying circumstances.
