THE ROLE

The Director of Human Resources (HR) provides strategic and operational leadership in all matters relating to human capital and labour relations, supporting the organization to deliver on its mission, vision, and value proposition. Partnering with the senior leadership team and the HR and operational leads in peopleCare’s Homes, the HR Director drives superior business outcomes and enables a strong and engaged organizational culture.

In alignment with peopleCare’s Strategic Plan and priorities, the HR Director oversees the development, delivery, execution, and evaluation of a comprehensive HR strategy – to guide all facets of the peopleCare employee life cycle, enable peopleCare’s ongoing rapid organizational growth and position the organization to continue leading transformative work within the senior living sector.

The HR Director leads, plans, directs, and delivers HR programs with a strong focus on excellent customer service and business partner approach, including: labour and employee relations, recruitment, retention, staffing, job evaluation, pay equity, occupational health and wellness, benefits, scheduling, and HRIS implementation and maintenance for the continued success of the organization.

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads organization-wide HR strategic initiatives from current state to the desired future state through idea generation, planning, design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Collaboratively leads the Human Resource Information System implementation and maintenance
  • Manages, coaches, and develops direct reports.
  • Develops, delivers, executes, and evaluates an HR strategy that guides all facets of the employee life cycle (e.g., attract, recruit, onboard, develop, retain). Coordinates with operational and HR leadership in the Homes to advance the strategy with a focus on continuously building and strengthening peopleCare’s talent pool.
  • Plans and leads negotiation process for all collective agreements for the organization and manages the overall labour strategy to ensure compliance with industry trends and positive management outcomes.
  • Develops and evolves the organization’s leading practices succession management process and plan in collaboration with the senior leadership team, and operational and HR leadership in the Homes.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to shared services HR, total rewards, payroll and leadership and development teams to ensure constant process improvement and increased efficiency.
  • Provides guidance for Homes’ operating budgets in relation to shared services HR programs.
  • Monitors and communicates emerging HR trends and issues as they relate to peopleCare, including analyzing data and recommending solutions to improve team member satisfaction, performance, and retention.
  • Cultivates strong working relationships with the senior leadership team, leadership team and operational leads across peopleCare Homes, regulatory bodies, service partners and other external and internal stakeholders.
  • Builds and fosters positive relationships with staff, residents, families, and community partners.
  • Develops and implements supporting policies, practices, and systems that comply with relevant legislation, health and safety and other statutory regulations including but not limited to: The Long-Term Care Home Act and Regulations, Employment Standards, Public Health directives, Ministry of Labour requirements etc.
  • Coordinates policy reviews and analysis including developing and implementing new policies in consultation with senior leadership, and operational and HR leadership in the Homes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • Must have CHRL designation
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience with a proven track record of success as a strategic and creative organizational leader in roles that have involved responsibility for strategic Human Resources and Labour Relations delivery in a complex operational environment (unionized and non-unionized)
  • Proven track record of developing high performance cultures and directly contributing to the enhancement of the overall business results
  • Deep subject matter expertise and a comprehensive understanding of progressive Human Resources policies, strategies and processes, and related legal context
  • Demonstrated ability to influence the business in a decentralized and centralized environment
  • Proven expertise in the area of talent management and organization development with a track record of successfully implementing and sustaining these programs
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership and mentoring with strong interest in development of others
  • Approachable leader who has proven to be an exceptional influencer with the ability to build strong relationships and excellent communication (written/verbal).
  • Ability to analyze various forms of data, synthesize information ability to anticipate future trends/consequences and create innovative strategies and flexible plans
  • Ability to communicate and display a high level of professionalism in-person, verbally and in written formats
  • Ability to communicate the key principles of leadership behavior which allow for the successful integration of strategic plans
  • Ability to successfully negotiate resolutions among senior leaders to reach a common understanding and achieve strategic goals
  • Strong organizational analysis a business acumen

In support of the peopleCare Communities’ commitment to a healthy and safe workplace and community, we have a vaccination requirement for all employees.

The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on the condition of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Fully vaccinated is defined as having received all of the required doses of a World Health Organization (WHO) approved vaccine and having received the final dose at least 14 days before your employment start date.

The candidate will be asked to provide the home with proof of full vaccination, prior to their employment start date. Acceptable proof includes an Ontario Ministry of Health COVID-19 vaccine receipt which you can obtain through the Provincial portal https://covid19.ontariohealth.ca/, or other government-issued vaccine passport or certification.

The requirement to be fully vaccinated is subject to the Human Rights Code, if the candidate is unable to vaccinate for a reason protected by the Code. Where the successful candidate has not been fully vaccinated, a documented medical reason provided by a physician or nurse practitioner and the time period for the medical reason may be accepted consistent with peopleCare’s COVID-19 Immunization Policy.
