Position Purpose

Reporting to the Chief Culture & Strategy Officer, the Manager, People & Culture is responsible for the execution and implementation of the People and Culture strategic priorities and the management and administration of the day-to-day operations for recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, employee relations, organizational design, job evaluation, compensation, performance management, learning and development, HRIS and systems and leadership and functional competencies.

The successful candidate will demonstrate in-depth knowledge and experience in providing strategic and operational HR consulting advice and services in a full-service HR delivery environment; strong client service orientation; solutions focused; and the ability to sustain collaborative working relationships across the school.  You are a proactive contributor with well-developed influencing, negotiation, interpersonal, problem solving and oral & written communication skills.  As the Manager, People & Culture, you will lead in operationalizing the P&C strategy, system design and improvements, and participate in special projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with hiring managers in understanding their staffing needs and support the process through the design of jobs, identifying top talent using a variety of recruiting channels, methods and best practices and executing staffing activities to ensure annual timelines are met.
  • Manage contract development for all new hires and staffing changes.
  • Lead and facilitate the new hire orientation and on-boarding process for all faculty, staff and supply teachers.
  • Support initiatives aligned with SMLS values and organizational direction including the planning and rollout of employee engagement activities, strategic HR initiatives, system design upgrades and implementation.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the organization and support team collaboration.
  • Research, develop and implement improved processes that increase efficiency and productivity, to facilitate talent management policies, programs, systems, and services that support the school’s strategic objectives, performance objectives and growth plans.
  • Manage and administer the annual flex benefits program.
  • Manage and administer the ADP HRIS system. Act as a backup to the Finance Manager for monthly payroll processing. Support Finance in the reconciliation of payroll reporting.
  • Maintain and update policies in accordance with best practice and applicable regulation.
  • Develop and maintain P&C metrics data/summaries/indicators for analysis and reporting purposes. Develop and deliver presentations and reports, executive summaries and training.
  • Co-Chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee and adhere to requirements for health and safety under the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Maximize the quality and effectiveness of training through evaluation and follow up.
  • Seek to continuously improve the quality and value of the P&C service provided to the school.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Post-Secondary education.
  • A certified Human Resources Professional Designation (CHRP/CHRL) or working towards.
  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of related experience. A generalist with exposure to all aspects of the HR function with sound working knowledge of current Human Resources best practices and the related regulatory framework.
  • Strong computer skills, fluent in Microsoft Office and Google Work and strong user knowledge of HRIS and payroll systems.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic and ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to build strong relationships, including interfacing and communicating effectively at all levels across the organization.
  • Strong consultative, negotiation, verbal, listening and written communication skills are required.
  • Versatile thinker, applying common sense and objectivity to evaluate and determine solutions.
  • Able to balance an analytical approach with a people-centric perspective when problem solving.
  • Sound knowledge of legislation governing the workplace.
  • Experience with on-line talent management systems.
  • Strong business acumen with demonstrated client service orientation.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment; demonstrate a strong sense of urgency; self-motivated, able to work effectively under pressure; ability to prioritize team efforts and meet tight deadlines.
