Reporting to the Supervisor, HR Administration and Programs, the Disability and Leave Management Advisor is a member of CAREFOR’s HR team. The Disability and Leave Management Advisor has primary responsibility to facilitate CAREFOR’s disability and attendance management programs and supports CAREFOR’s managers and staff by providing a comprehensive, progressive and supportive approach to both occupational and non-occupational injury or illness and wellbeing.
The Disability Management Advisor will provide coaching and consultation to managers, employees, union and third-party stakeholders and will facilitate all aspects of disability management processes including incidental absenteeism, long term disability, accommodation, worker compensation, and management of benefits and pension while on leave.

As a self-starter, you are able to anticipate and proactively respond to requirements based on prior experience.
As the ideal candidate, you will:
- Supports employees through all stages of occupational and non-occupational illness and injury. Ensuring that relevant and appropriate medical documentation is collected.
- Facilitates employee re-integration to the workplace through planning, implementation and coordinating timely modified work programs; as appropriate liaise with other health care professionals, third party consultants, disability insurance carriers and the WSIB.
- Ensures timely completion of required documentation for WSIB, LTD and private insurances.
- Oversees the incidental and short-term sick leaves and maintains appropriate contact with staff on leave.
- Ensures protection of confidential and sensitive employee information.
- Collaborates with managers regarding disability management and absence prevention.
- Participates in the development of the disability and attendance management programs by monitoring effectiveness, efficiencies and identifying trends.
- Coordinates the process and placement of employees with complex accommodations needs.
- Supports the attendance program, meeting with employees, providing assistance, advice and training to ensure compliance.
- Communicates with employees on leave requiring payments for benefits and pension continuation.
- Coordinates benefits and pension payments with the Finance and Payroll teams for those employees on leaves.
- Ensures compliance with AODA standards/requirements and acts as a subject matter expert for AODA related issues/complaints.
- Assists with ergonomic requirements for staff which includes arranging assessments as required
- Produce statistics and other reports.
- Works in partnership with the CAREFOR’s JHSCs to provide proactive approaches to support a safe work environment and assists with special projects as required.
- As required, develops and delivers content for various interventions and training related to attendance, disability.
- Acts in accordance with CAREFOR’s policies, values and mission, etc.
- Uses sound judgment in consideration of financial resources
- Works within the HR team providing supports as needed.

We are looking for an individual who has:
- Thorough knowledge of legislation and principles pertaining to disability management/ support, WSIB, return to work and accommodation.
- Thorough working knowledge of and understanding of related legislation and regulations, including Workers’ Compensation Act and Human Rights Legislation, and AODA.
- Effective case management skills.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail, excellent organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
- Comfortable with dynamic, ever-changing environment and apply sound judgement and flexibility to determine solutions right for the circumstance.
- Ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines, and effectively manage internal/external relations.
- High degree of proficiency in all MS office applications.
- Ability to preserve confidentiality.

You will need to have:
- Post-Secondary education in a related field such as Human Resources, Rehabilitation Counselling, Health Sciences or Social Sciences.
- Disability management certification, Occupational Health Certification.
- Minimum of 3 years’ of progressive experience in a related field such as disability/WSIB management, health & safety, human resources or occupational health, including experience with complex claims management preferably in a unionized and public sector environment.
- Experience with workplace health programs is preferred as well as a working knowledge of external insurance providers.
- Demonstrated excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with a proven effective customer service focus.
Qualifications considered an asset:
- Experience working in a health care environment and/or working in a non-profit organization.
- Oral and written proficiency in English; proficiency in French will be considered an asset.
- Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario would be considered an asset.
