The Workplace Abilities Coordinator plans, coordinates and administers all activities related to short term disability (STD), long term disability (LTD), Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and all activities/interventions related to accommodation and return to work functions leading to the safe, early and sustainable return to work for all employees. 

What You’ll be Doing

Using an abilities focused model, the coordinator oversees case management for absences and accommodations related to illness, injury and disability. The coordinator supports management in the development of absence prevention and early intervention strategies, monitors and tracks key trends related to WSIB, STD, LTD absences and accommodation practices to identify opportunities for re-integration to the workplace, and participates with employees, leaders, HR and the union to develop return to work action-plans and plans for pro-actively dealing with return to work barriers.

Sheridan has launched Sheridan Wellness: Our Strategy for Community Well-being, a campus-wide wellness strategy. In support, the incumbent will develop, implement and promote workplace wellness solutions to enhance employee and organizational health. This position will partner with Human Resources, Student Affairs, Occupational Health and Safety, the Centre for People and Organizational Development and the Academic Faculties in support of the Campus Wellness Strategy.

About You

The successful candidate will possess a 3-year diploma/degree in Business, Human Resources, Nursing, Occupational Health or a related field along with 5 years experience in disability management and accommodation including coordinating early and safe return to work plans. (Equivalency to be considered.) 

Experience working in a complex unionized environment and the ability to interpret legislation and working knowledge of related provincial legislation are also required.  

Other qualifications include: 

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate with compassion and empathy. 
  • Strong research and analytical skills for data collection and analysis. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Good judgement, diplomacy, discretion and sensitivity to confidentiality, privacy and human rights.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet time sensitive deadlines.
