Reporting to the Vice-President of Human Resources, the Director Human Resources will work in tandem on strategic and operational decisions and provide expert advice, leadership and effective management of various HR functions including talent acquisition and onboarding, engagement and leadership, total compensation and rewards, legislative compliance and HRIS.  They will be a hands-on relationship builder charged with engaging our team members and building our great culture. 

JOB DUTIES:

Human Resource Leadership and Planning

  • Champion for Stephenson’s people and values while executing strategies to attract and engage team members across the organization.
  • Lead by demonstrating the required behaviours, attitudes, and mindset to develop a strong corporate culture and position the company for continued, sustainable growth. 
  • Build effective relationships across the organization
  • Actively participate in and provide leadership, planning and decision-making related to the HR function. 
  • Provide HR expert advice to Managers and Team Members.
  • With a focus on proactive customer service, build an effective, high performing team with a focus on recruiting, selecting, training, motivating and evaluating staff to ensure effective service delivery and career growth.
  • Effectively navigate a fast-paced environment and excel in face of ambiguity and frequent change.
  • Collaborate with internal leaders and operational employees across the organization to gather feedback and enhance employee programs.

Human Resources Best Practices

  • Seek opportunities for continuous improvement to HR programs and swiftly implement or adapt the appropriate changes or enhancements to ensure highly credible and respected HR programs within the industry.
  • Develop and promote internal and external recruiting initiatives.
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments by ensuring compliance to Employment Standards, AODA, Human Rights, and any relevant government regulations.
  • Lead incident and employee relations through analysis, investigation and follow-up.
  • Promote employee engagement and develop programs based on feedback, exit interviews, internal data, etc.
  • Prepare and analyze HR reports and initiate recommendations based on the data.  This includes developing programs to leverage our Ceridian Dayforce HRIS and lead the development of key performance indicators and measurements.
  • Implement and offer ongoing HR related training and educational programs as part of the culture of the organization.
  • Work with the VP of HR to develop and monitor HR budgets.

Total Rewards

  • Accountable for the development, implementation, and administration of comprehensive total rewards strategies (compensation, benefits, incentive programs, group retirement and perquisites) that align employee rewards with Stephenson’s strategic objectives.
  • Responsible for the application and maintenance of the Job Evaluation classification systems in a fair, equitable and consistent manner.
  • Work with carriers to provide outstanding services to our employees including effective program delivery and progressive return to work strategies when required.

Health & Safety:

  • Adhere to all Company safety standards and any customers safety standards when on-site.
  • Use of personal protective equipment as required by the Company is mandatory.
  • Reports any workplace hazards and helps to eliminate them.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant legislated standards, such as WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods etc. that impact on the store or position.
  • Participation, review and sign-off on any new polices distributed with respect to safety.
  • Helps promote safety to all Staff, Customers, Suppliers and Contractors.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Vice President, Human Resources

Supervises: HR Manager and growing team in the future

Location: Head Office – Mississauga (Dixie and Derry) with frequent travel to GTA based locations.  Please note that we will consider “work from home” options for individuals in the GTA.

Works With: All Management Staff & Employees

External Relationships: Suppliers, consultants, vendors, lawyers and various legislative bodies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Post-Secondary education
  • CHRL designation

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of established HR Generalist Experience and ideally 2 years at the HR Director level. 
  • Ability to develop and implement HR strategies while balancing the day-to-day tactical HR needs.
  • Solid experience in recruiting for a variety of roles (Full/Part Time, Technical/Non-Technical, Hourly/Salary, etc.).
  • Employee Relations experience at all levels within an organization and with various legislative/regulatory bodies.  This includes Employment Standards (all Canadian provinces) as well as Common Law, Human Rights, etc.
  • Strong compensation background including job evaluation, market evaluation, etc.
  • Proven ability to interpret, evaluate and apply regulations, policies and procedures to a wide variety of work situations.
  • Experience with Ceridian Workday HRIS and experience in rental services, construction or manufacturing environments is preferred
  • Bilingual (French/English) and  Continuous improvement (i.e. Kaizen, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.) experience is a strong asset.

  • Must have strategic approach and be very interested in the challenge of shaping the talent growth strategy of an evolving company.
  • Able to think analytically about the HR function and develop metrics and measures to evaluate programs.
  • Can work with cross-functional teams across all levels of the organization
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and can present technical topics to non-technical audience in an engaging manner

  • Strong interpersonal/communication skills, leader, team-builder, analytical, detail oriented and ability to work with minimal supervision.
