Responsibilities

The Human Resources Specialist will carry out a variety of human resource related activities with a specific focus on staff recruitment for the VP Academic Programs portfolio (including the Centre for Teaching and Learning and Western Continuing Studies) and the Office of the Registrar. The Human Resources Specialist will provide recruitment related expertise and guidance and will respond to inquiries and resolve issues independently. The Human Resources Specialist will also maintain and implement administrative processes and practices and provide related rationale, advice, education and support to colleagues and leaders within the portfolios. In addition, the Human Resources Specialist will interpret Western's collective and employee agreements, policies and procedures, as well as relevant legislation and act as a resource to ensure that human resource functions are implemented accordingly.

Qualifications

Education:
-    Undergraduate Degree with a major in Human Resources/Industrial Relations
-    Certified Human Resources Professional
-    Completion of or working toward CHRL is preferred

Experience:
-    3 years’ experience in a Human Resources role with a focus on recruitment 
-    Experience in a unionized environment is preferred
-    Experience with Human Resources in a Higher Education setting is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-    Familiarity with Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act regulations
-    In-depth knowledge of Human Resources statute, principles and practices in area of focus and of the Employment Standards Act, and other relevant legislation
-    Knowledge of Western collective agreements and policies impacting staff is an asset
-    Communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
-    Ability to produce high-quality results and workable solutions that meet client needs
-    Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
-    Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with highly confidential subjects or issues
-    Adapts readily and effectively to changing priorities and demands
-    Ability to work independently and maintain direction and focus through proactive planning and organized approaches to work
-    Ability to create a positive impression while interacting with others and responding to inquiries, by telephone, in person or electronically
-    Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
-    Proven ability to take initiative and champion a project from conception through implementation and evaluation
