Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, the Senior Manager, Total Rewards will function collaboratively as a member of the HR Team and will play a critical role in the design, implementation, delivery enhancement and communication of Total Rewards programs and initiatives. 

 

The Senior Manager, Total Rewards, will provide leadership on compensation, benefits and pension programs, creating alignment with the organizational goals, through the development of compelling compensation philosophy, ensuring competitiveness within the industry and community, and compliance with collective agreements and relevant legislation.  Further, they will provide leadership and expertise on best practices related to the design and operation of benefit and pensions program and manage the responsibility for the day-to-day administration and compliance with the programs. 

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Manages the Compensation, Benefits and Pension programs, policies, and processes for the organization in Canada.
  • Acts as an internal consultant and business partner with the Human Resources team, Payroll, and other stakeholders, actively participating in key discussions relating to Comp/Benefits/ Pension in support of the organization’s mandate to attract, retain, and motivate top talent.
  • Oversee continuous process design and improvement and provide leadership as the subject matter expert.
  • Lead the annual compensation processes including general increase, merit, short term incentive programs
  • Lead the annual benefit plan renewal process including cost analysis, design reviews and preparation of communications
  • Lead all employee-related materials for Total Rewards:  the content creation, brochure/booklet updates, comp statements, web content, webinar/education sessions – working closely with our 3rd party partners.
  • Lead the market intelligence and benchmarking process
  • Provide oversight of payroll management and benefits administration
  • Act as the primary contact for benefits pension providers as well a guidance and responses to employees’ inquiries.
  • Partner with finance legal etc on the regulatory and financial aspects of the Total Rewards program.
  • Use data to monitor trends and recommend initiatives, plan design and vendor changes, and process enhancements to improve the Total Rewards offerings and administration.  Recommend plan changes to management.
  • Oversee, consult and provide direction to ensure required changes to the collective agreements and/or legislation are effectively implemented.
  • Perform regular audits to ensure practices and processes are in compliance with all requirements.
  • Provide supervision and direction to the junior members of the team and ensure accurate and timely completion of benefits and pension documentation and administration. 
  • Manage relationships with 3rd party service providers for selected benefit programs to ensure service level agreements are adhered to and that we maximize the program’s offering.
  • Coordination and oversight for benefits, short terms and long-term disability management, and pension administration through outsourced providers. Oversight of ongoing delivery and liaison between internal customers and vendors as well as ongoing vendor management and ensuring contractual performance standards are met.
  • Partner with Enercare’s Pension Committee, 3rd party pension administrator, consultants and vendors to ensure our retirement program are market competitive and administered as per plan text and service level agreements and in compliance with legislation and CAP guidelines. 
  • Acts in an advisory and support capacity to the Pension Committee on matters related to plan design, governance, administration, financial and investment affairs, and legislative requirements.
  • Responsible for completion of annual pension regularly filings and other legislated reporting.
  • Responsible for the pension enrolment and termination processes to ensure changes are processed in a timely, legislatively compliant manner and monitor results to ensure 100% compliance; provide documentation for internal and external audit requests as required.
  • Provides subject matter expertise on any plan change, M&A or harmonization initiative.
  • Work with service providers in development, update and delivery of educational and communications sessions and materials to promote plan members’ awareness and understanding of all Enercare benefits and pension programs. 
  • Validate and coordinate payment of invoices from all HR service providers.

 

Experience/Qualifications:

  • University degree in Business or Human Resources, CEBS, CHRP/L designation or equivalent knowledge and experience is a requirement with continuous professional training in pension, benefits
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in pension and benefit administration (legislative experience in both DC and DB pension plans required)
  • Deep knowledge of compensation and benefits program development, implementation, and legislation
  • Experience with managing job levelling frame-working or job evaluation methodologies
  • Expert understanding of benefits and pension plan operations
  • Good general business acumen and understanding of HR Management and HR Services
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, balancing the activities of many different priorities at any one time
  • Superior verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate compensation, pension and benefits information to non-experts
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, compliance requirements and quality of work
  • Ability to work both independently and with team members
  • Experience working with mergers and acquisitions, plan redesign initiatives

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Able to reconcile and analyze financial information to ensure accuracy of premiums and service provider/carrier invoices.
  • Expert skills in Excel spreadsheets, databases, reporting and data manipulation and analysis.
  • Advanced skills in other MS Office applications including 365, Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint and various internet browsers.
  • In-depth knowledge of various Human Resources Information Systems, preferably Ceridian’s Dayforce HR/Payroll.
  • Knowledge of various benefit and pension provider interface systems, including Manulife VIP room.
  • Strong communication skills to lead content and updates to all employee materials.

 

Team Membership

  • Works closely with and assists the Human Resources team in the administration of on‑going and new initiatives, including external consultants and service providers through projects, as well as the planning, scheduling, and development of effective work processes.
  • Delivers expert strategic advice and collaboration on a variety of initiatives to facilitate and support Human Resources plans, which are aligned with departmental initiatives and the strategic plan of the organization. Provides back-up to the other team members and demonstrates flexibility and commitment to the team in order to maximize resources and support the team during peak periods.
