RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Associate Director, Labour Relations will be a strategic business partner by providing consulting services, representation, support and advice regarding labour and employment matters. Utilizing exceptional communication, influencing and collaboration skills, the Associate Director, Labour Relations will actively promote and foster a positive and constructive employee and labour relations environment in a complex, multi-union organization. The position reports to the Director, Faculty and Staff Relations in supporting the strategic directions of the University in collaboration with the Vice-President, Provost & Academic and the Associate Vice-President, Human Resources & Organizational Development.

The successful candidate will:

  • Manage, develop and deliver workshops and/or training for stakeholders on the administration of the collective agreement and best practices in labour relations;
  • Foster an environment that supports a proactive and constructive relationship with labour partners through the effective, consistent and collaborative administration of relevant policies, past practice, arbitration decisions, legislation and the collective agreements;
  • Utilize a proactive problem solving approach to manage conflict and/or resolve difficult employment situations, consistent with the University's policies, collective agreements, past practices, arbitration precedents and applicable legislation;
  • Develop recommendations and solutions to deal with complex labour relations issues and facilitate issue resolution process;
  • Provide assistance to the Director, Faculty and Staff Relations and other stakeholders on the interpretation and application of collective agreements, relevant policies, arbitration decisions, and applicable legislation;
  • Gather necessary data and information, and prepares and/or delivers the University’s response to labour relations matters;
  • Help ensure all legislated, collective agreement and policy driven obligations of the University are met;
  • Assist the Director, Faculty and Staff Relations with collective agreement bargaining, including conducting research, analyzing data and trends and helping to prepare bargaining proposals;
  • Ensure compliance with the University’s commitments and policies by monitoring critical deadlines, managing personnel data, and overseeing the preparation of documents, notices, and other administrative communications;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Human Resources, Psychology or related field and/or equivalent combination of experience and education;
  • A Master’s degree in Labour Relations, Business Administration or L.L.B/J.D. is preferable;
  • A CHRP/CHRL designation is an asset;
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years’ experience in human resources and/or labour relations coupled with proven knowledge of applicable employment legislation;
  • Experience assessing and interpreting complex collective agreement language and providing effective guidance to stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated experience in successful conflict resolution;
  • Experience handling contentious matters with sensitivity, confidentiality, and balance;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in both official languages, French and English, including adept listening skills;
  • Exceptional facilitation and negotiation skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines and the need to respond quickly to meet departmental/employee needs and resolve problems;
  • Third party facilitation / mediation training is an asset.

 

Hours of work :

Hours of work are based on the normal operating hours of the University and are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (May until August) and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (September until April), amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
