The City of North Bay is inviting applications for the position of Health and Safety Advisor.  Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, the Advisor is a resource to all levels within the organization with the goal of integrating a culture focused on health and safety with daily operations, resulting in continuous improvement of the Workplace Risk Management System; reduced accidents, incidents and costs; and enhanced awareness of workplace risk management by all staff.

The Advisor plays a lead role in the ongoing development and implementation of the Corporation’s Workplace Risk Management System; conducts audits of the City’s System; and makes associated recommendations to the Director, Human Resources for enhancements.  The Advisor provides consultation to all levels of the organization and to a variety of committees regarding workplace risk management matters relating to accident investigations, workplace inspections, ergonomics, hazard identification, etc., and is responsible for education and training in workplace risk management matters.    Working in collaboration with the Human Resources Team, the Advisor also provides support and guidance to all levels of the organization in regard to early and safe return-to-work. 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education with a specialization in Human Resources, Health and Safety or related discipline, combined with 5 years relevant experience, preferably in a unionized environment;
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation including Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code;
  • In depth knowledge with occupational claims management including return to work and accommodation plans;
  • In depth knowledge and proven application/experience with all aspects of WSIB administration and the WSIA, preferably with complex claims;
  • Experience developing and delivering training to a wide variety of audiences;
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and to challenge normally accepted practices in the workplace and to explore and recommend new ideas;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop excellent working relationships and to promote organizational goals and objectives through effective communication;
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Certified Human Resources Practitioner (CHRP), Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL), Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation, Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP); Certified Return-to-Work Coordinator (CRTWC) Certification; or other relevant certification(s) are considered assets.

The annual salary range for this non-union position is $78,646 - $98,294. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.
