The Manager, Human Resources is responsible for overseeing the following areas, but is not limited to, employee relations, payroll, compensation programs, base, and variable pay, legal compliance, HRMS, policies & procedures, Corporate Governance, and pay & employment equity. The Manager, Human Resources continuously monitors changes to applicable legislation, upcoming HR trends and employment law. As a key member of the HR Team, this individual contributes to and supports HR strategic planning and design. In this role the individual continuously works towards process improvement and makes recommendations to improve our business environment and employee morale while balancing employee relations with company policies and initiatives.

The incumbent will report to the Director, Human Resources and will be based out of Subaru Canada’s head office in Mississauga, ON.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Act as the key contributor, subject matter expert and point of contact for matters related to the overall Total Rewards Strategy in collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Working collaboratively with the Director, Human Resources, apply expertise to evaluate, design, develop, and implement total compensation procedure that is tied to performance.
  • Manage, plan, and execute the annual compensation cycle (base and variable pay), internal equity and pay equity reviews, including the annual performance management review process, pay for performance, internal equity and pay equity reviews, required communications and other incentive and rewards programs. Guides HR advisors and people leaders through the process.
  • Assess the market competitiveness, equity and overall effectiveness of the employee group health and retirement group benefits plans.
  • Monitor and recommend enhancements to ensure competitiveness and cost effectiveness, balancing the need to support the well-being of a diverse workforce with long-term sustainability.
  • Develop or update related policy documents and communication material as needed.
  • Lead the annual renewal of contracts with group benefits and insurance carriers, in collaboration with the Director, HR and benefits consultants.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to assess the impact of renewal proposals to ensure alignment with plan philosophy, ensuring the competitiveness of premium rates with an eye to sustainability for the future coupled with employee experience.
  • Audit programs and policies to ensure they meet the needs of organization and comply with legislative requirements and overall governance policies and procedures.
  • Manage the executive participation in the annual employee performance ratings calibration process. Manage day-to-day compensation activities, including benchmarking, salary banding, bonus plans, survey’s, job evaluation, market competitiveness analysis, legal compliance, and specific ad hoc requests from management.
  • Analyze key stakeholder feedback, talent trends, internal/external data, & cost implications, to develop recommendations on total compensation to support business decisions.
  • Manage and deliver annual Corporate Governance training and the Conflict of Interest disclosure forms.
  • Lead incentive and rewards related projects and programs.
  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, and administration of all HR policies & procedures.
  • Coach, consult, and collaborate with each level of management on various areas of human resources management.
  • Work closely with the Director, Human Resources to establish and maintain annual personnel/administration budgets and department objectives.
  • Work closely with the Director, Human Resources on strategic and workforce planning. Handle complex employee relations issues and where appropriate, inform senior management on legal implications, and recommend solutions.
  • Manage a variety of personnel issues relating to absenteeism, short-term and long-term disability, return-to-work, maternity leaves, retirements, expatriate assistance, & counseling.
  • Work continuously to support and find solutions and improvements to a variety of Human Resources challenges.
  • Responsible for supervising and overseeing the workload, performance management and development of direct reports.
  • Assist with all personnel issues/inquiries including questions on payroll, current legislation, Employment Standards Act, company policies, and other special requests in addition to providing guidance on personal matters.
  • In consultation with the Specialist, Payroll & Benefits, manage the Ceridian Dayforce bi-weekly payroll, government reports and monthly/annual remittances (including report on earnings, WSIB premiums and annual reconciliation reports and remittances including RL-1 Summary, CSST, Annual Declaration, WSIB, AIR Return, EHT, and reduced EI premiums) which may include preparation and/or back-up.
  • Ensure Ceridian Dayforce is functioning properly, and relevant documents and workflows are in place.
  • Work with the Specialist, Recruitment & HR Administration to support the recruitment process including conducting job evaluations, salary evaluation, & employee orientation.
  • Work closely with the HR Team to support and maintain employee services and operational requirements.
  • Manage the Employee Policies and Procedures Manual to ensure compliance with corporate and legislative standards (including new policy drafts, updates to existing policies, etc.).
  • Research, develop, and design new or improved human resources programs for all staff as required.
  • Research and monitor health benefit trends/design and make recommendations for change with the assistance of our benefit consultants.
  • Monitor utilization reports oversee effective benefits administration including annual renewals.
  • Manage all Employment Equity activities and monitor progress of employee plan objectives and timeframes, as required.
  • Responsible for implementing of relevant training and development programs, as well as employee benefit seminars (RRSP, Pension, benefits) for all staff. Other duties, as assigned.

Administration

  • Oversee a variety of office administration.
  • Responsible for review and control of personnel budget including monitoring expenditures, review department invoices and recommend strategies to decrease overhead administration and personnel costs.
  • Support the HR & Administration Team with a variety of staff activities and company-wide functions including fundraisers, staff meetings/events, and Christmas party.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant University Degree and Human Resources Certificate.
  • CHRL Designation or working towards. 
  • Member of HRPA in good standing.
  • Strong compensation skills with qualifications in pay for performance
  • Experience handling employee relations matters
  • Proven payroll experience - Ceridian Dayforce HCM (Human Capital Management) system a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of Saba TalentSpace on-line performance appraisal system a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of Employment Equity, Federal Contractors Program, and WEIMS an asset.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Ceridian Payroll/HRIS and Internet (Administration responsibilities only)
  • Extensive purchasing knowledge and experience.
  • Previous experience as a Health & Safety Committee Member and Standard First Aid & HeartSaver an asset.
