POSITION SUMMARY

 

In this new role, the Human Resources Generalist will provide key operational and strategic support across all areas of the Vector Institute, an independent, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to research in the field of artificial intelligence, excelling in machine learning and deep learning.  

 

Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, the successful incumbent will provide support across several areas of the Human Resources function including the development and roll-out of new HR programing, coaching support, engagement survey administration, training execution, health and safety compliance, performance planning administration, compensation administration, metrics reporting and more.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Champion and/or participate in the development and roll-out of key HR projects, programs and initiatives in support of Vector’s vision, mission, strategy and culture;
  • In partnership with the Manager, Human Resources, provide strategic and tactical advice, coaching, and counseling support on employment-related issues across all HR disciplines including the interpretation and application of legislation, corporate policies, and Vector-specific programs and processes, ensuring both consistent application and operational compliance;
  • Lead in the administrative execution of the bi-annual employee engagement survey including survey administration and implementation. In partnership with the Manager, Human Resources, review and analyze survey results and partner with key stakeholders to develop, apply, and evaluate meaningful plans of action in response;
  • Lead all compliance-based HR Training initiatives including Code of Conduct, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and Health and Safety training sessions and help develop new training programs as required;
  • Sit as a member of the Vector Institute Joint Health and Safety Committee, taking a leadership role in ensuring the execution of committee initiatives;
  • Oversee the annual performance management and merit salary review cycle, ensuring all performance evaluations are completed in a timely fashion, and that corresponding compensation and coaching recommendations are appropriate, fair, and effective;
  • In partnership with Talent Acquisition Specialist and Manager, Human Resources, ensure talent acquisition needs are met by supporting workstream leaders in organizational and team design.
  • Participate in an annual salary survey by compiling and providing Vector salary data and in partnership with the Manager, Human Resources, reviewing the results of the completed survey against current compensation practices to ensure appropriate, fair, and effective compensation plans are in place;
  • Update and maintain Vector’s salary bands based with revised salary survey data and personnel changes within the organization (i.e., additions, departures, promotions, or role reclassifications); In partnership with the Manager, Human Resources, utilize salary band data to advise in hiring and other compensation decisions;
  • Maintain accurate and complete HR-related payroll records and reports (i.e., data related to new hires, status changes, salary changes, and time-off) and share these with the Finance team on a bi-weekly basis;
  • Conduct an annual policy review of human resources and other corporate policies annually or more frequently as needed;
  • Working with the Talent Acquisition Specialist, measure and report all HR metrics;
  • Act as a member of interview teams as needed and provide continuity support to the hiring process in times of significant hiring volume;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

KEY SUCCESS MEASURES

 

  • Feedback from Vector staff and other stakeholders validates that HR is viewed as approachable, trusted, respected, and for providing valued services, counsel and support;
  • HR achieves all objectives for its annual and strategic HR business plans;
  • HR Metrics are measured, tracked, and reported accurately;
  • People processes at Vector run smoothly, accurately, and error free;
  • Employee relations matters are resolved in an ethical fair manner in alignment with Vector’s policies and culture that mitigates risk for the Vector Institute; and
  • Vector maintains legislative compliance with its employment policies and programs.

 

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

 

  • A graduate from an HR post-grad diploma programme or holds an undergraduate degree in a related field;
  • 2+ years of relevant HR generalist experience in complex, intellectually challenging, and fast-paced, high-growth organizations; CHRP designation or in progress;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a broad portfolio of HR responsibilities spanning a variety of HR functional areas, including Talent Acquisition, Employee Relations, Training, in an organized manner, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanour;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, human rights, accessibility, and equity;
  • Highly effective client and candidate relationship management skills, working with stakeholders ranging from Executives to employees and world-class faculty and students;
  • Accurate and has highly developed and effective written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Passionate about supporting and developing talent and in contributing to Vector’s success in achieving its mission and strategic objectives.
