West Park Healthcare Centre (the Centre) helps patients get their lives back by providing specialized rehabilitative and complex care after a life‐altering illness or injury such as lung disease, amputation, stroke, and traumatic musculoskeletal injuries.  Founded in 1904 as a TB sanatorium, the Centre has grown and evolved its programs and services to include:

We are proud to operate the only dedicated inpatient TB unit in Ontario designated a “provincial resource”.  We are a leading spasticity treatment provider and are designated as Ontario’s Provincial Centre of Excellence for Long-Term Ventilation.

West Park Healthcare Centre employs approximately 1,000 clinical and operations staff dedicated to supporting patients in inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory care, and outreach services.  West Park is building a new hospital and transforming its 27-acre site into an integrated campus of care, enabling the hospital to evolve its rehabilitative programs to meet Ontario’s future healthcare needs. The project, with a contract value of $1.2 billion, will include the construction of a new six-storey hospital overlooking the Humber River valley. The new hospital is scheduled to open in 2023, bringing transformational change to the campus and its staff. 

About the Role

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President, People and Culture is a key member of the Centre’s senior leadership team. This newly created position was developed to focus on our people and their experience in the organization.    

The Vice President will be accountable for the Centre’s People Strategy. The incumbent will partner with the senior leadership team and be responsible for developing and enhancing HR strategies, policies, and programs to reflect the Centre’s mission vision and values, enhance the experience of our people and nurture a values-driven culture.  

As a senior leadership team member, the Vice President will play an integral role in planning for the transition to our new facility and an integrated campus of care. The Vice President will be directly responsible for the Centre’s corporate HR Operational Readiness Plan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as a trusted strategic advisor to the CEO and the senior leadership team. 
  • Leads a team of HR managers and professionals across the spectrum of HR disciplines.
  • Leads volunteer services.
  • Oversees Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness.
  • Accountable for strategic planning, programs, policies and operations within the portfolio of responsibilities.
  • Provides regular updates and reports to the Board of Directors and its committees as defined in board work plans and as required.
  • Drives operational effectiveness and efficiency throughout their portfolio.
  • Understands the drivers of engagement and in collaboration with the management team, develops strategies and action plans to optimize employee and volunteer engagement and the experience of our people.
  • Supports and facilitates change, using a change management framework to optimize adoption while positively impacting stakeholders, the employee experience, and meeting operational and strategic goals.
  • Leads the Centre’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) strategy, including being an executive sponsor to the Centre’s EDI Collaborative.
  • Oversees all employee and labour relations issues in ways that foster an inclusive and collaborative workplace.
  • Establishes, maintains and executes a workforce plan to ensure the right mix of talent and employment models to reach current and future needs. 
  • Fosters and advances staff engagement through the application of best practices and innovative solutions in HR management.
  • Implements programs and strategies to enhance teamwork, collaboration and a strong sense of community in the hospital.
  • Provides strategic leadership for organizational development to address issues such as talent management, succession planning, employee retention, organizational design and change management.
  • Actively engages with external peer networks and professional/industry associations to inform and shape the Centre’s people strategy. 

 Requirements

  • At least 10+ years’ progressive experience in Human Resources with broad generalist experience in a variety of HR disciplines.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a senior leadership position.
  • Master's degree preferred in Business, Human Resources, Industrial Relations or Psychology.
  • CHRL Designation preferred.
  • -Experience working in unionized and non-unionized environments.
  • Progressive experience in the rehabilitation, public LTC, hospital or broader healthcare sector
  • Additional private sector experience preferred.
  • Ability to build and maintain solid business relationships with senior-level executives, physicians, volunteers and staff at all levels.
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, verbal, written, presentation preparation and delivery, and facilitation).
  • Proven ability to lead and shape company culture, an adept change agent.
  • Commitment to operate with a high degree of respect, empathy, and integrity.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Desire to engage with external peer networks and professional/industry associations to inform and shape the Centre’s people strategy.
