The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry provides outstanding education within a research-intensive, distributed learning environment where tomorrow’s physicians, dentists and health researchers and other scholars learn to be socially responsible leaders in the advancement of human health. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (Schulich) is the largest Faculty on the Western University campus and employs over 2,000 part time and full time faculty and over 1,500 staff.

Responsibilities

The Associate Director will provide leadership to an operational team in the Office of the Dean and will work in collaboration with the Executive Director, other Directors, Vice-Deans and other Faculty leaders to develop, implement and monitor business processes and strategies relating to the recruitment, appointment, on-boarding, development, engagement and promotion of all administrative and student staff supporting the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry (SSMD). The role will identify areas for improvement and design new and revised practices with controls in place to ensure high quality employment experiences, and that financial, legal and operational risks are mitigated. The Associate Director will also lead staff recruitment and engagement strategies to ensure alignment with SSMD and Western's Strategic Plans. The role will ensure that highly efficient, client-focused and responsive services are delivered to the SSMD community.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Human Resource Management or Business Administration;
  • Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) Designation

Experience:

  • 10 years’ human resources management experience, project management, change management, or organization development experiences, within a unionized environment
  • 7 years’ supervisory (team management/leadership) in a senior leadership role
  • Experience implementing a large, multi-year HR strategic plan
  • 5 years of experience in labour relations and working in both clinical and academic environments
  • Extensive experience leading programs and policies for a diverse workforce balancing political, community and other stakeholder interests
  • Experience in the health, education or public sector is preferred
  • Formal education in human resources and labour relations an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of Employment Standards minimum requirements, Labour Relations Act regulations, and Human Rights Code
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop shared vision to lead employees to excellence
  • Verbal communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
  • Ability to perceive and understand the emotions of others and interact with them appropriately based on those emotions
  • Critical thinking skills to analyze problems, and collect information required to make an accurate conclusion
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple assignments that are accurate and thorough, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities
  • Self-driven, critical thinker who is highly skilled at anticipating and resolving stakeholder relation issues
  • General knowledge of Compensation, Pensions & Benefits, Payroll, Records management, Occupational Health & Safety, Rehabilitation Services, Equity, Human Rights and Accessibility, Staff Relations, Learning and Engagement
  • Ability to deal confidentially with information that has financial, political, regulatory and reputational implications
  • Advanced ability to effectively communicate (orally and in writing), lead business discussions and educate others
  • Professional manner, tact, diplomacy, and discretion in dealing with all levels of an organization including senior management
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours and travel on occasion to various clinical sites in the area to resolve complex issues
