About the Role: 

The incumbent is an integral contributor of the Employee and Labour Relations team by building positive relationships with Unions and our client groups by being able to achieve solutions aligned to the organizational strategy. Reporting to the VP Human Resources this position is accountable for negotiating and implementing collective agreements between Kerry’s Place and four unionized groups, and leading a team of HR Managers. The Director implements programs and oversees compliance with the collective agreements, and provides advice, expertise and guidance to multiple stakeholders. The Director is responsible for managing the grievance process to resolution through communication, education and/or investigation and preparing and presenting cases for arbitration.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement labour relations strategy for Kerry’s Place
  • Formulates and recommends program goals and objectives in all areas of employee relations.
  • Maintains satisfactory labor-management relations through a variety of techniques.
  • Participates in collective bargaining negotiations and ensures compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Investigates problems such as working conditions, disciplinary actions, and employee and applicant appeals and grievances. 
  • Provides guidance and recommendations for problem resolution to departmental leaders and employees.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of employee relations activities, surveys and engagement/retention efforts.
  • Prepares and presents required and special reports related to employee and labor relations.
  • Develops and presents the operating budget for the employee and labour relations department and, upon final budget approval, ensures that all functions operate within appropriated amounts.
  • Effectively recommends hiring, promotion, termination, disciplinary and commendatory actions of all assigned personnel.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree business/industrial relations/human resources 
  • Human Resource designation i.e. CHRL preferred
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificate preferred
  • 7 or more years’ experience in a human resources or labour relations role in a unionized environment
  • Develop and review HR related policies
  • Proven success in client relationship management with an ability to develop credibility and influence decisions
  • Experience in leading union negotiations, chairing grievance meetings, and preparing complex cases for Arbitration
  • Experience in conducting complex workplace investigations and supporting and defending Human Rights Claims
  • Ability to lead and manage effectively in a large, multi-site, matrixed, fluid, and fast-paced environment
  • Solid knowledge of Human Resources policies and procedures, and employment-related legislation (Labour Relations Act, Pay Equity Act, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Employment Standards Act, etc.)
  • Superior knowledge of legal principles and framework associated with all aspects of Labour Relations (including collective bargaining, grievance arbitration, discipline and discharge, performance management, attendance management, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct data analysis (cost/benefit), interpret information, resolve complex issues and prepare recommendations and proposals that support business objectives
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel including advanced working knowledge of creating and managing complex spreadsheets and/or other technical programs e.g. HRIS
  • Excellent communication skills to enable collaboration with all levels of the organization and the ability to synthesize technical material into easily understood language
  • Must be able to travel between all sites as required.
