The Role and Opportunity:

Reporting to the Chief Talent Officer (CTO), the Director, Human Resources will create an extraordinary workplace environment. The Director of Human Resources will be responsible for the development of progressive Human Resources that will meet CHEO’s current and future needs.
The Director is relied upon to act as a trusted business partner, through close partnership, the Director will provide expert advice and feedback while ensuring compliance with policies, procedures and employment legislation and collective agreements, on areas of employee and labour relations, operations, compensation and benefits, organizational development, talent management, accommodation, occupational health and wellness and workforce analytics in support of operational and financial responsibilities.
The Director, Human Resources will have six director reports: Manager, Labour Relations; Manager, Talent Acquisition; Manager, Occupational Health and Wellness; Manager, Organizational Development & Learning and Manager, HR Transformation and Total Rewards and Supervisor, Human Resources.

In leading by example, the incumbent will focus on the following key priorities:

• Quickly learn the unique environment and business of integrated pediatric care.
• Foster a culture built on respect and trust, wellbeing, and life-long learning in the Department.
• Promote and foster a safe and healthy work environment.
• Champion ongoing modernization and automation of HR processes, ensuring optimal balance of service and efficiency.
• Continue to build strong union relations.
• Provide advice and guidance to leaders to build leadership capacity across the organization and in support of their roles as managers.
• Manage budgets, purchasing activities within budget allocation.
• Oversee organizational compensation and benefits policies and provisions; review exceptions to individual compensation requests/issues and ensure they are aligned with organizational policies, practices, balance and equity.
• Provide guidance, coaching and assistance to leaders in developing effective people practices.
• Provide leadership, coaching and mentorship to the reporting Human Resources teams.
• Establish and evaluate benchmarks, goals, and objectives aligned with corporate strategic direction; establish performance metrics and monitoring systems in collaboration and with the Chief Talent Officer (CTO).
• Lead/participate in the development and implementation of HR policies, programs and continuous improvement initiatives.


The Ideal Candidate:

Success in this role will require a combination of generalist human resource and talent management experience, leadership acumen, championship of change, and results achievement inclusive of the following:

• Strong advisory, negotiating and problem-solving capability, operates as a partner to management, providing professional advice and counsel.
• Exceptional interpersonal and engagement skills; adept at forging and maintaining relationships.
• Balances collaboration, collegiality and collective problem-solving with timely decision-making.
• Brings relevant labour relations experience and knowledge.
• An experienced people manager and team builder who can shape, mentor and coach teams to strong performance.
• Strong team player.
• Capacity in both official languages is essential.

What You Bring to the Role:
Qualifications:

• Undergraduate degree preferably in Human Resources or related field.
• Post-grad program or Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations, Organization Development, Human Resources, or related field would be an asset.
• Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) certification.
• 10 years relevant experience in key areas of human resources management/leadership.
• Police Record Check (PRC).
• Extensive HR generalist experience.
• Demonstrated experience in HR best practices in enabling business goals, building positive employee experience and enabling desired workplace culture.
• Experience in a unionized healthcare or public sector organization preferred.
• Previous experience working as a leader of Health and Wellness programs in a unionized environment preferred.
• Demonstrated successes leading, coaching and motivating teams.
• Strong and effective interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and dispute resolution skills.
• Ability to interpret and apply legal decisions/case law and to build strong relationships and consensus and to establish trust.
• Ability to understand the organization and take a systems perspective.
• Service-focused and change leadership skills.
• Results oriented and ethical decision-making ability.

Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third-party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
