Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing advice and support on issues related to all local and central collective agreements, hospital policies and employment law. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting with the development and maintenance of effective day-to-day labour relations with the hospital’s unions. The successful candidate represents the hospital’s interests by participating on union-management committees, administering the grievance process and plays a leadership role alongside the Manager, Human Resources with collective bargaining. The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of employment laws and statutes in Ontario. This position must have the demonstrated ability to work with individuals at all levels throughout the organization. The HR Advisor must have the ability to provide direction to staff and leaders on a broad range of employment law topics. Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, provides coaching, guidance and facilitates decisions to ensure successful implementation of the both the HR & departmental operational plans.  This position is to work Monday to Friday, occasional evening and weekend work.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and counsel in all areas of Human Resources including: employee relations, collective agreement interpretation and performance management
  • Grievance and dispute resolution management, including representing CMH at mediation and arbitration hearings
  • Reinforce appropriate application of HR policies and procedures
  • Deliver guidance on matters involving workplace violence, workplace discrimination/harassment, complex return-to-work/modified work 

Qualifications:

  • University Degree related to human resources management, industrial/labour relations or equivalent combination of education and relevant recent experience in labour relations
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ current experience in an unionized environment required, preferably in a healthcare environment
  • Previous experience as a negotiation officer or leading contract negotiations in a unionized setting is an asset
  • Certified Human Resources Professional designation (CHRP) an asset  
  • Must have excellent knowledge of employment and labour law, jurisprudence and statutes
  • Mediation/dispute resolution skills an asset
  • Demonstrated experience in Labour Relations, in a multi union workplace, preferably in a health care setting
  • Experience with leading workplace investigations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities at the same time
  • Proven analytical skills and the communication skills to present information to various stakeholders at all levels within the Hospital
  • Must have strong competency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills, including conflict resolution skills
  • Exceptional judgement and acuity; strong ability to manage sensitive issues and to communicate on such matters thoughtfully and appropriately
  • Coaching, counselling and facilitation skills needed to lead managers/directors in developing effective people practices
  • Adept at prioritizing issues and workloads, and effectively managing client expectations
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to achieve resolution in conflict situations
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required
