Director, People & Culture

Located within Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Bayview Avenue in Toronto, the Foundation consists of more than 75 professionals and support staff who work in close partnership with our Hospital colleagues. Position Overview:

The Director, People and Culture is responsible for the strategic direction and management of a comprehensive and innovative human resources program for Sunnybrook Foundation.  The Director is a trusted strategic partner to the senior leadership of the Foundation, providing advice to ensure organizational development goals and strategies are achieved across the Foundation.

The incumbent works in collaboration with senior management team members to deliver effective Human Resources services including guiding and influencing a values-based culture, performance management, employee engagement, professional development programs, and equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

The Director is a member of the foundation’s senior management team and reports to the President & CEO, working very closely with the foundation executive leadership team.  The Director leads the HR team that currently includes a People Specialist and an HR Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities:

Human resources leadership including but not limited to:

  • Responsible for the strategic direction and operational oversight of all core human resources functions. Aligned with the foundation’s strategic priorities, the Director collaboratively sets and guides the direction, decisions and policies for our staff. Ensures that the scope and focus of our HR activities are aligned with the foundations mission and strategic directions.
  • Oversees all aspects of employee engagement and development, talent strategy, and management. As our most senior people leader, this role focuses on the stewardship of the end-to-end talent strategy that best supports the Foundation’s mission, values, vision and strategic directions.
  • Develops and implements the Human Resources Business Plan, including planning, budget development and monitoring, establishing accountability, identifying solutions to resolve problems and fostering a diverse workplace that enables all employees to contribute to the organization at their full potential.
  • Leverages and analyzes HR data such as to guide decision-making, priority setting and opportunity identification in staffing models and the way services are delivered.
  • Provides coaching, encouragement and mentorship to leaders as well as emerging leaders in the organization on people management and leadership with a focus on performance management, organizational development & effectiveness, and leadership effectiveness.
  • Maximizes synergies with our hospital partner while addressing our unique Foundation needs.
  • Oversight and Direction on all day-to-day human resources functions.   This includes, but is not limited to:
    • People and culture best practice policies, systems and processes
    • Innovative recruitment and retention strategies and programs
    • Creative compensation strategies and frameworks
    • Employee and leadership development programs
    • Performance management and reward and recognition programs
    • Employee relations Equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives
    • Health & Wellness initiatives and best practices
    • Maintains compliance with all legal, regulatory and reporting matters

Human resource support services leadership including but not limited to:

  • Function as a trusted advisor to the senior leadership team, providing thoughtful counsel and leadership on all HR related matters.
  • Researching, recommending and collaborating on best practice human support services across the organization.
  • Facilitating organizational design, succession planning and people resource management strategies.
  • Overseeing the design and continuous improvement of performance management programs including job evaluation, compensation, benefits and performance management.
  • Provide oversight and guidance in the development of learning opportunities for staff, and management.
  • Ensures we are creative and innovative in our approach to learning, to growing our staff and reinforcing corporate goals and objectives through learning together.
  • Leading employee engagement and change management programs and activities.

Role Requirements:

Competencies

  • Strategic thinker with excellent decision making skills including the ability to form and defend independent judgement with the ability to influence others
  • Culturally competent leader with an appreciation of the value of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Demonstrated ability to engage staff at all levels and to lead groups and facilities group activities in a consultative and collaborative manner
  • Skilled written and verbal communicator with strong negotiation, team building, conflict resolution and consensus building skills

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related human resources field from a recognized institution; Master’s degree in human resources or a related field is considered an asset
  • Post graduate certificate in human resources management and/or equivalent combination of education and progressive human resources experience
  • Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation an asset
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience, including at least 3 years at a management level, preferably in a fundraising or health sector organization
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered
