JOB SUMMARY

The Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and adherence of the Company’s health and safety program, policies and procedures as required under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Workplace Safety Insurance Act through deliberations with HR, management, and departmental leaders.

Flexibility may be required to complete training days or based on seasonal needs. Notice will be given in advance.

In this role the successful candidate will report directly to the Human Resources Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for monitoring the adherence to the Company health and safety program by all employees, agency workers, contractors, and visitors within the workplace.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and proactively build or revise programs to address changing requirements.
  • Co-chair the JHSC. Ensure that the JHSC is in place and operating as required by law, including the nomination/recruitment of members, certification of management and employee representatives, members receive committee training, and that meeting minutes are appropriately recorded, shared, and posted.
  • Conduct/coordinate with JHSC the monthly workplace inspections and maintain records; participate directly in spot audits and develop plans to address any issues identified or prepare notices for management to correct identified hazards.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to health and safety concerns raised from various sources e.g., managers/supervisors, employees, JHSC, and MOL inspectors. Assist appropriate department manager and HR to address and resolve health and safety inspection orders.
  • Partner with department managers on injury/accident/incident reporting to ensure proper reporting has been completed and corrective actions have been implemented.
  • Assist with WSIB claims management. Partner with department managers and HR to create and communicate return to work plans. Monitor and meet with modified workers to ensure a safe and timely return to pre-injury duties.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor health and safety and hazardous materials policies and procedures throughout the Company in compliance with regulations.
  • Develop/maintain health and safety training content and materials (e.g., health and safety related policies and procedures, SOP’s, WHMIS, lockout tag out) for employee new hire/refresher training. Present health and safety related training as required.
  • Coordinate and schedule worker training with external vendors as required e.g., working at heights, aerial platforms, forklift, first aid and CPR, etc.
  • Maintain health and safety boards, first aid log binders, and SDS binders.
  • Coordinate with external vendors for safety equipment inspections e.g., fall protection equipment.
  • Monitor and replenish first aids kits. Maintain personal protective equipment program and inventory.
  • Conduct and document risk assessments related to jobs (Job Hazard Analysis) and new equipment introductions. Recommend appropriate risk mitigation to management.
  • Assist and be involved in the review of new operations, processes, and procedures (as well as proposed changes to existing operations) at the proposal and/or design phase to ensure health and safety matters are considered and incorporated.
  • Make recommendations regarding safety initiatives. Maintain a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in occupational health and safety or related field is required.
  • CRSP, CHSC or similar health and safety professional designation is an asset.
  • Part 1 and 2 Joint Health and Safety Committee Member Certification is an asset.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR training is an asset.
  • Valid Ontario G driver's license is required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience within a safety role in a manufacturing or similar environment is required.
  • Experience working in a food packing/production facility, logistics/transportation, agriculture industry is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, Human Rights, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act is required.
  • Experience with WSIB claims management, incident investigation, workplace inspection, ergonomics, and risk assessments are required.
  • Knowledge of workplace wellness programs and initiatives is required.
  • Complete proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other common applications.
  • Mechanical aptitude is an asset.
  • Decisive, team player, and be able to work well under pressure.
  • Highly motivated individual with proven initiative.
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong presentation and persuasive written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally.

Abilities:

  • Ability to walk the plant floor and drive to near by farm locations is required.
  • Ability to travel periodically to coincide with Gwillimdale North operations (New Liskeard, Ontario).
  • Combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stair climbing.
  • Personal protective equipment required in plant and on the farm (e.g., steel toes footwear).
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
  • Ability to speak and write in fluent English.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is an asset.
