A support department within Bruce County, the Human Resources team tackles all aspects of employee relations while also driving important initiatives that matter to our workforce. We are constantly striving to explore new opportunities, tackle new challenges and turn each day into an adventure.
Employing over 700 people in a variety of positions, the County is committed to supporting and developing our current and future employees. In partnership with the departments, Human Resources is responsible for all aspects of employment in the County. Located in the Administration Centre HR supports managers, supervisors and employees in effectively delivering public services.

About the job
Reporting to the Employee Health & Labour Relations Manager, the Health, Safety and Wellness Specialist supports the management of workplace health and safety portfolios including disability management, workplace accommodations and corporate health and safety and wellness with a focus on proactive initiatives to enhance employee wellness. This position is heavily involved in the development and implementation of an organizational safety management system, with appropriate policies, procedures and processes, and ensuring that all County staff understand their workplace health and safety duties and have the tools and training to meet those duties.
Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Health and Safety or in a related field
- Three years of experience developing, implementing, and overseeing Health & Safety programs
- Experience working with all levels of staff in an organization
- Experience with "best practice" programs as opposed to those dictated by legislation i.e. incumbent has had to assess option and recommend the best fit for an organization
- Ability to identify issues and recommend creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems
- Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret goals, objectives, and policies
- Ability to remain calm and poised in urgent situations
- Ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Experience working in a unionized environment
- High flexibility with strong interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment
- Experience working in a unionized environment
- Proven ability to develop and implement training and development courses
- Proven experience preparing and conducting post-implementation evaluations
- Strong conflict resolution skills
- Strong knowledge of industry specific health and safety legislation
- Valid Class G Driver’s License
Assets:
- Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) Certification
