York Region Children’s Aid Society (YRCAS)

Board Vision

Governance for excellence in accountability and leadership.

Board Mission

The Board of Directors of the York Region Children’s Aid Society will function in a governance model that facilitates engagement of all board members effectively, maximizes the contribution of individual members competencies and experience, uses best practices in the implementation of its governance policies and provides leadership that demonstrates accountability to the community, funders, children’s services providers and most important, the clients of the York Region Children’s Aid Society.

AGENCY VISION:

Every child and youth has a healthy future in a caring family, in supportive communities.

AGENCY MISSION:

YRCAS collaborates with communities to provide and advance equitable and accessible supports to ensure the well-being of the diverse children, youth, and families of York Region.

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for caring and concerned community members in York Region to contribute to making our communities places where families can thrive.  We are now accepting applications to join our dynamic Board of Directors as we are on the leading edge of change in the Child Welfare Sector.  The Board of Directors has made significant changes recently, renewing its policies and by-laws after a comprehensive review by the Institute on Governance and we continue to see positive outcomes through our leadership team, as we work to implement recommended changes and partner with communities to create opportunities for children, youth and families in York Region.

Like many organizations, YRCAS has embraced the challenges related to ensuring that our values of equity and inclusion are realized in our everyday activities, policies and processes. The changing demographics of our country highlight the need for more diverse approaches to governance that stimulate dialogue and innovation, improve strategic thinking and decision making, expand networks of dedicated talent, and help organizations better align themselves with the communities they serve.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Currently, we are seeking individuals who live or work in York Region and are accomplished leaders in their chosen field of endeavour, with demonstrated community leadership experience, awareness and understanding of the specific challenges faced by their respective communities. Successful candidates will preferably have experience with non-profit boards, be passionate about the Agency’s mission and understand their governance role in that capacity. Persons with expertise in Human Resources Management, Marketing, Communications, Social-Media, Fundraising, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Government Relations, Anti-poverty, lived experience with Child Welfare, Homelessness, Addictions and Mental Health, or Child Trafficking would be highly valuable additions to the Board.

TIME COMMITMENT

Board members are expected to attend at least eight board meetings per year, participate in at least 1 board committee and should expect to volunteer eight– ten hours of their time per month. Meetings are held in person at the Newmarket Office located at 16915 Leslie St, Newmarket, ON L3Y 9A1 or virtually via MS Teams every 5 weeks from 6pm-8pm.

THE AGENCY

YRCAS is responsible for the provision of child welfare services for York Region with an annual budget of approximately $50 million. Each year, the Agency receives over 5,000 initial referrals and conducts nearly 3,000 investigations. At any given time, the Agency is providing support and counselling to more than 800 families and manages the care and support of approximately 250 children and youth. The Agency employs approximately 400 full-time and part-time staff, 58 foster families, and 25 volunteers.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

YRCAS is governed by a 16-member Board of Directors with accountability for the Agency’s mandate, funding, and the safety of children living in York Region. The Board sets the strategic direction for the agency, recruits, supports and evaluates the CEO, and provides governance oversight of day-to-day operations, which includes monitoring the agency’s effectiveness and service outcomes through a range of performance indicators. The Board monitors the use of resources, evaluates and improves its own governance effectiveness. In addition, Board members act in an advocacy capacity by representing the agency to stakeholders in the community, to donors, and to local members of provincial parliament as needed.
